The narrative follows Will Stone, a thirteen-year-old who reports for duty as a drummer for the Continental Army at Saratoga after a drummer is injured. His drum signals must communicate commands during battle, and an early mistake sends soldiers to arms instead of breakfast. Alongside the historical backdrop of John “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne’s forces and the Battle of Saratoga, the story uses Will’s experience to show how fear, duty, and learning shape his role, while Tom the fifer offers guidance and 1777,a difficult year for colonial Patriots.Their war for independence from the British wasgoing badly.British forces had beaten the ContinentalArmy in New York and Pennsylvania. Many Patriotsfeared the Revolution was doomed. \nJohn“Gentleman Johnny”Burgoyne was a Britishgeneral. He commanded about 7,000 experiencedsoldiers. They seemed unbeatable. \nOn September 19,1777,Continental troops facedBurgoyne's army near Saratoga,New York. The battleraged for weeks. The outcome of the Battle ofSaratoga would be crucial to America's future.Thisfictional story describes the final days of that battlefrom the viewpoint of two young Patriots. \n# Reporting for Duty\n\nThirteen-year-old Will Stone hurriedthrough the chilly October dawn.A drumhung from his neck. \nWill was about to embark upon a great \nadventure.Today was his first day as a drummerfor the Continental Army.He had joined CaptainCrawford's company at Saratoga. He was replacinga drummer who had been hurt in battle. This \nmorning,he was reporting for duty.He ran towardthe captain's tent. \nFor several weeks, the Americans and theredcoats had been fighting at Saratoga.Eachday, the battle grew more intense. The Britishtroops were fierce fighters, but the Americanswere holding their own. \nToday,Will thought,I'l see a battle. The ideafilled him with excitement and fear. \nWill knew that army drummers had animportant job.In the noise and confusion ofbattle, the sound of drums and flute-likeinstruments called fifes could be heard moreeasily than a person's voice.Officers usedsignals played on these instruments tocommunicate with soldiers during battle. \nDrummers had duties off the battlefield, too. They played signals for commands thattold soldiers when to wake up,eat, and march. \nWill loved to drum.He had been playing theinstrument for the past five months. He had taughthimself the various military signals. So,when heheard that one of the American drummers hadbeen hurt,he had run immediately to the armycamp to volunteer for the job. He'd had tworeasons for wanting to do it. \nThis was one of thefirst American flags. \nThe Patriots printed anti-British pamphlets \nLike many colonists,Will wanted freedomfrom the British. He felt the British king wasunfair. The king made the colonists pay hightaxes but didn’t let them have representativesin government. \nWill also had a personal reason even moreurgent than his wish for freedom. His father hadbeen using his print shop to produce anti-Britishpamphlets.The pamphlets encouraged people tosupport the revolution. \nWill's father had been handing out the \npamphlets to other colonists. If the British troopswon the battle, they would control Saratoga.Th","cbCaieqZPFeBgZ3R","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieqZPFeBgZ3R","pdf",2092221,"English","# Foreword\n# Reporting for Duty\n# Terrible Start","[{\"question\":\"What conflict does the story
