It highlights Castro’s early claims of building a true democracy and his public denials of communism, then contrasts them with the later rupture in U.S.-Cuban relations, including support for the Bay of Pigs. CASTRO\n\nCommunist Dictator of Cuba \nAt 2 A.M.on the morning of January 1,1959,Fulgencio Batista, the hated military dictator of Cuba, fled the Presidential Palace at Havana and went intoexile in the Dominican Republic.Only a few daysbefore,Santa Clara had fallen to the Rebel Army ofFidel Castro, and Batista, realizing that his dis-heartened army was on the verge of collapse, decidedto leave Cuba while he could still enjoy the millionsof dollars of public moneys which he had illicitly placedin foreign banks. In atriumphal week-long procession,Fidel Castro emerged from his stronghold in the Sier-ra Maestra Mountains and journeyed to Havana.Where-ever he went in Cuba,he was hailed as a liberator, andhe constantly reiterated his pledge to establish a dem-ocratic society for all the Cuban people. In the UnitedStates,as in Cuba,Fidel Castro was also hailed as aliberator and as a champion of democratic freedom.InApril,1959,Castro went to the United Statesto addressthe American Society of Newspaper Editors, and histrip was a complete triumph. \nTHE GREAT BETRAYAL\"We want to establish inCuba a true democracy,\"Castro told the American ed-itors,''without any trace of Fascism,Peronism,orCommunism. We are against every kind of totalitari-anism.”Later,on a nationwide television newsinter-view program, the Cuban leader flatly stated,\"Iam nota Communist, nor do I agree with Communism.”TheAmerican people and their government were only toowilling to take Castro at his word, and during thishoneymoon period in United States-Cuban relations, the \n3 \nentire American people wished the Cuban revolutionwell.Yet,within two years, the United States wouldbreak diplomatic relations with Castro's Cuba andwould actively encourage the ill-fated Bay of Pigsexpedition designed to topple his dictatorship.Thislamentable state of affairs came about because FidelCastro betrayed his own revolution and committedthe supreme infanticide by killing the democraticpromise which he himself had made.Instead of cre-ating a democratic society in Cuba,Castro took theCuban people down the path of Communist dictatorshipand established a police state tyranny every bit as badas the Batista dictatorship which he overthrew.Thereasons for this betrayal of the Cuban revolution arenot fully known and are not likely to be known for sometime, but a large part of the answer may be found inthe character and psychological make-up of FidelCastro. \nTHE YOUNG FIDEL Until the time that he led the at-tack on the Moncada Barracks in July,1953,FidelCastro's life is a puzzle wrapped inside an enigma.Accounts of his pre-1953 activities are so contra-dictory that the biographer is at a loss to distinguishfact from fancy.Castro himself
