per year \nMay 1946 \nIn this issue: \nCheering Our Wounded HeroesBy Phyllis Dolan \n.The Test \nAS this is being written, the Se-curity Council of the UnitedNations is in session in New York, andthe world is looking to it with one ques-tion uppermost in its mind—What isRussia going to do next and will theUnited Nations(and the world's hopesfor peace)survive it? \nVery much on the negative side of theledger is Russia's sending of fresh troopsinto Iran shortly before the United Na-tions meeting, and worse was her sug-gestion that the meeting be postponedtill her\"negotiations\"with Iran werecompleted. On the hopeful side, thereare three important points:That Russia'srequest for the postponement was noteven taken seriously, much less granted;that the issue was met head-on by put-ting the Iranian affair at the top of theagenda;and finally, that on the eve ofthe meeting Stalin felt constrained toannounce his faith in the United NationsOrganization. \nThe last of these is the least impres-sive,as it is always good policy to puton an innocent look when the police arearound, and Stalin has done it before;but in the light of the first two it takeson an importance that may be great. \nIt may,in fact,be the first sign of rec-ognition by the Soviets that the time hascome to present to the world somethingmore constructive than unilateral action, broken pledges, and counter-charges.The rest of the world has finally cometo realize that if\"Russian cooperation inpeace”means no more than this,it is notworth while;and for the first time isbeginning to accept the fact that if Rus-sia refuses to behave inside the UnitedNations,it is better to have her out.Agangster in the position of Chief of Po-lice is a whole lot more dangerous thanone whose picture is tacked up in all thepost-offices. \nIt is this determination of the othernations to bring the Iranian question upeven if it wrecks the UNO that presentsthe Soviet leaders with a new situation, \nand may bring them to their senses.Aslong as we are committed at all costs to\"save the UNO\"we are at the same dis-advantage in dealing with Russia thatwe were during the War,when we werecommitted at all costs to\"save Alliedunity.” \nThe Soviets can still outmanoeuvrethe UNO meeting if the diplomats arenot careful. It is not yet clear that theSoviet-sponsored Iranian Premier,Ah-mad Ghavam is not sufficiently underRussian influence to\"withdraw\"the Ir-anian complaint. It is almost certain thatthe Soviet representative will filibusterwith its pet issues of Spain and Greece, and the Polish Army in Italy, whichhave already tired out two meetings tothe point where nothing was accom-plished. \nThe UNO is not very old,to be facingsuch a big test, but the nations whichmake it up are giving signs of an im-proved ability to call a spade a spade. \nGetting Under Way \nTWo months ago,THE MARIANISTpublished a suggestion fromthe Director of one of the larger Mari-anist institutions in this country,to theeffect that the best way of coming to therelief of destroyed or damaged institu-tions in war-ravaged countries would befor each Marianist school in this countryto\"adopt\"a sister-institution in Europeor the Orient.Direct contact would bemaintained between the schools con-cerned,so that needs could be learnedat first hand, and international interestand understanding could befostered. The scheme has educational goals aswell as those of simple relief. \nThe idea is beginning to catch on,andseveral Marianist schools, including thatfrom which the suggestion originated, have already taken steps to put it intopractice. As the program gets under way,it will be carried beyond the schools toparent and alumni groups, and otherfriends of the Society of Mary.Readersof THE MARIANIST are invited to be on thelookout for such activities in their owncities;or,if they prefer, may associatethemselves with the program by corre-spondence with this magazine.
