But Sumitomo Electric Industries,Furu-kawa Electric Co.and Fujikura Cable Works will provide the cable, and Nippon Electric Co.will provide the electronics. \nIn a separate NTT project,a telephony-oriented,single-mode fiber system wil1 be com-pleted by late 1984 or early 1985,according to Ohashi. This system wil1 run from Sapporoin northern Japan to Fukuoka in southern Japan. \nThe INS,which will run between Mushashino and Mitaka, will use 250 digital phonesets and 750 non-telephone service terminals. The system is primarily digital using opti-cal fiber, but it will also use analog and metallic cable in special instances, accordingto preliminary diagrams. \nThe model INS is intended to confirm: \n● Technical feasibility of each digital system in constructing an end-to-end digitalnetwork. \n● INS serviceability and economy. \n● Requirements for establishing new rules and regulations to be applied to the publicand the bit-based tariff structure. \n● The impact on engineering, construction, maintenance, marketing and traffic operationof NTT business and requirements for establishing new training programs due to that impact. \n●A detailed method for appealing to the people for understanding and support of theINS. \nIncreased interest of related industries. \n## OPTICAL FIBER-BASED HUBNET CAN TRANSMIT DATA 5 TIMES FASTER THAN ETHERNET,CANSTAR CLAIMS\n\nBased on experimental tests,Canadian scientists are predicting that an optical fiber-based local area network being developed by Canstar, the Canadian cable and wire manufac-turer,can transmit 5 times faster than the popular Ethernet system developed by Xerox,In-tel and Digital Equipment Corp.Canstar Market Development Manager Ronald Doyle told usthe system--dubbed Hubnet--can transmit data at 50 Mbps. \nThe prototype for Hubnet is now being developed, and the first field trial is sche-duled for next month. The test,1 year before active product marketing begins, will use100 terminals,Doyle said. \nHubnet is a contention-based,multiple access, active optical fiber network that uses \na rooted-tree,star-like topology, according to Canstar. The network satisfies the needs \nof the LAN user by integrating high-performance optical fiber communications channels with \nadvanced networking concepts and technologies. \nHubnet uses point-to-point links to interconnect the hubs in the tree with each otherand with network access controllers(NACs),a series of which are attached to each hub. \nCommunications paths between hubs and NACs use twin lightguide cables, according toCanstar. Each optical link has a range of up to 2 km,allowing Hubnet to operate over awide area. \nDoyle said plans now call for 100 micron multimode fiber to be used in the system. \n## DEFENSE DEPARTMENT REAPER SEEN BYPASSING OSA CONFERENCE\n\nThe Defense Department's broadsword--which struck down more than 100 papers beforethey were presented at the recent Society of Photo-Optical Instrumenta","cbCaibaLy3vcVSWF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibaLy3vcVSWF","pdf",2810675,"English","# Fiber|LaserNews\n## Optical Fiber-Based Hubnet\n## Defense Department Reaper and OSA Conference\n## Japan Prototype Fiber System","[{\"question\":\"What system is Japan developing as a prototype for multiservice networking?\",\"answer\":\"Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) began installing a prototype information system using single-mode optical fiber between Tokyo suburbs to support telephone, facsimile, data, and video services.\"},{\"question\":\"What performance claim is made for Canstar’s Hubnet compared with Ethernet?\",\"answer\":\"Canstar scientists predict Hubnet can transmit data 5 times faster than popular Ethernet, with the system reportedly able to transmit at 50 Mbps.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the document describe defense department censorship concerns for the OSA conference?\",\"answer\":\"It reports that defense actions had struck down many SPIE papers, while OSA is expected to have fewer problems, though some papers could still be affected and visa issues remain.\"}]","Fiber|LaserNews - Biweekly Report on Optical Fiber and Laser Technology | PDF",1790688610,23]
