ANNOUNCEMENT,BELL LABS sUCCESS;PLAGUED BY MILITARY SENSORS \nOFC-83 kicked off this week in New Orleans, highlighted by announcements of importantdeals and technological advances as wel1 as shrouded by military cenorship, which can-celed one of the sessions. \nConference key note speaker Soloman Buchsbaum delivered an upbeat message recommendingstronger industry-government relations, particularly with regard to trans ferring informa-tion from federal 1abs to industry. While saying the United States could make better useof the $80 billion spent annually for research and development, the Bell Labs vice presi-dent cited recent advances in telecommunications where research is working.Buchsbaum al-so not ed that AT&T\"is selling optical fiber like hot cakes.\" More than 100,000 km havebeen sold in the last year,he not ed. \n## PHILIPS ACQUIRES M/A-COM SHARE IN VALTEC\n\nEnding months of negotiations,U.S.Philips Corp.has acquired M/A-Com's 50%share inthe fiber producer Valtec Corp.,it was announced at the conference.Philips is now soleovner of Valtec, ending a joint venture started in February 1981.Terms of the deal werenot disclosed. \nrather than to continue as the target of damaging speculation,he told us.Sources earli-er told us that M/A-Com was looking for someone to take its place,Philips being a likelycandidate(FIBER/LASER,Jan.21). \n\"We feel that M/A-Com can best utilize its capabilities and take advantage of theseopportunities by focusing its efforts_on the high technology digital equipment requiredfor these advanced systems,\"M/A-Com President Richard DiBona noted.Valtec will continueto be an important fiber supplier to M/A-Com,he added.Storm clouds first appearedaround the joint venture when DiBona told the stockholders meeting M/A-Com was seeking adimished role in the venture. \nU.S.Philips Corp.is a wholly owned subsidiary of the U.S.Philips Trust and a li- \ncens ee of N.V.Philips of the Netherlands.Valtec this week also announced it is market- \ning single-mode fiber. The fiber costs $1.10 per meter. \n## .…BELL LABS SENDS UNBOOSTED MESSAGE 119 KM USING SINGLE-MODE FIBER\n\nBell Laboratories has sent an unboosted signal 119 km using single-mode fiber,report-edly breaking the record for transmission dist ances without use of regenerators.Datarates of 420 Mbps were achieved at Bell Labs Holmdel,N.J.,according to a paper presentedat the conference by Bell Undersea System Laboratory offical Richard Wagner. The previousrecord was 274 Mbps sent a distance of 101 km。 \nThe test was done using the same type of single-mode fiber employed in a recent Bel1Undersea trial(FIBER/LASER,Nov.12,1982)。Light was transmitted at the 1.5 micronrange. The test was cited by officials as an example of rapid advances occurring in the \ntechnology.Bell Undersea Laboratory Director Jack Sipress noted that such results \"couldsignificantly lower the costs of long-distance communications.\" \nAt the plenary session Monday morning, fiber pioneer and ITT Executive ScientistCharles Kao suggested the trans-oceanic systems without repeaters and light transmissionswith losses of less than .01 db/km will be developed. \nWhen questioned by FIBER/LASER NEWS,Kao said such systems would not appear until8ome time \"well into the 21st century.By that time,\"Kao said,\"the oceans will be lit-tered with optical fiber.\"While recognizing that repeaterless trans-oceanic cables andastronomically 1ow light losses are not envisioned soon,Bell Labs director of widebandtransmission facilities,Ira Jacobs, also noted that 10 years ago \"no one was predictingthat we would have reached the point that we now have.\" \nB","cbCaieiKK4q23bMI","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieiKK4q23bMI","pdf",3454809,"English","# OFC-83 Coverage and
