The Mustang GTD’s impact on Ford’s next generation of sports  \ncars is therefore more significant than this steroid-infused Mustang that looks ready to throw a few punches and lock up those who try stand in its way. Suffice to say, the proverbial dial was turned up to eleven.  \nWhen it came to creating the Mustang GTD, Ford wasn’t content to beef up the current Dark Horse; they wanted to completely reinvent its perception and catapult its position amongst supercar enthusiasts, not just in America but globally too. At the same time it fed into a new stream of motorsport that Ford has got involved in (Formula One, Dakar and Le Mans) to make it very clear that  \nFord had some serious ambitions about racing, and how they could take that development to the road. Let’snot forget that Ford was practically built around racing when founder Henry Ford entered and won his first, and only, race in 1901 in Michigan.  \nBack to the GTD-a name derived from the IMSA “GTD” racing class for cars built to FIA GT3 technical regulations-is a bona-fide race car for the road that has rivals like the Porsche GT3 RS in its sights. However, it’s more exclusive with only 1,000 units being built. At $510,000 it’s also the most expensive Mustang ever sold, but a relative bargain compared to Ford’s ultimate GT which retailed for $780,000 a few years ago.  \nAlready there have been special versions to make the GTD more exclusive and have Mustang fans frothing over. The one in these images  \nin the Spirit of America with the iconic Tribar colour scheme from 1964 and the word Mustang splayed on the underside of the rear wing. Another special edition is the Liquid Carbon GTD where the carbon fibre body is left unpainted. Regardless of the paint, or lack thereof, styling is what you’d expect if Shelby and Roush got together and had a baby. Any idea of subtlety went out the window before there was even a pulse.  \nThe GTD begins life on the same production line as the Mustang before taking a special detour through to Multimatic-based in Canada – the same engineering gurus that plied their magic on the Ford GT.
