Normally, the fact that Ferrari has sidelined the petrol engine to launch a pure electric car would be enough to get the keyboard warriors sharpening their pitchforks... throw in that it’s one of the most polarising car designs, well, ever, and I’m predicting the internet will be a full on bin fire.  \nI can see it from both perspectives. Theirate social media scroller who cannot understand why a company with Ferrari’sclout and momentum would take such a hard left turn towards controversy, and therefore feels the need to shout about it to as many strangers as possible. And Ferrari, which wants to maintain its position as technological torchbearer and felt making a huge statement with its first EV was necessary.  \nProblem is, in a world where high end EV sales are losing ground faster than a three-legged racehorse, there were always going to be big questions around the timing of the Luce launch. Why does a highly profitable company need to take this risk? Was offering full design autonomy to Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson – two ex-Apple product design geniuses, but with a distinct lack of automotive on their CVs – potentially a little rash?  \nThe technical specs, with over 1,000bhp and four motors for flab-masking torque vectoring, sound mesmerising. The packaging with rear hinged doors, as much legroom in the back as a Skoda Superb (don’t laugh, compliments get no higher) and proper everyday useability is the right way to go. And the interior is masterful – a blend of digital wizardry, precision manufacturing and tactile physical switchgear. At that point, why not hand over the exterior design to Flavio Manzoni (who I can only assume is raging and trying to distance himself) and Ferrari’s in-house design team? Ive and Newson’s fingerprints were already all over the radical interior, so did the exterior design also need to be such a departure?  \nThere will be diehard Ferrari and Apple fans who’ll buy it for the novelty, those who’ll appreciate the engineering might that’s gone into this car, and a handful of trailblazers who’ll love how different it looks and feels to anything that’s gone before; how it challenges our views of what a beautiful car looks like. But I fear the size of this potential customer pool will be vanishingly small, especially when you filter out those that can’t afford the (rumoured) £400k to £500k entry ticket.
