One of the things I enjoy about compiling this monthly newsletter is that the speakers featured at these events include not just wellknown scholars whose names are already familiar to me, but also young, up-and-coming Christian scholars who are being given a larger platform for their work. I invite you to join me in looking over these rich offerings, and in giving thanks to God for the vitality of Christian scholarship even in the context of “secular” higher education. \nFor many years, the sort of work we did at study centers felt…well, somewhat fringe, or at least off-the-radar. We gathered in small groups in quiet corners of the campus and sometimes wondered how many people noticed. I wouldn’t say that everything has changed, but a lot has changed. Not only are study centers continuing to grow and cut a larger profile, but the very nature of dialogue on campus regarding character, formation, and viewpoint diversity has really changed. I don’t mean to suggest we brought about this change—the forces at play are large and largely impersonal—but one senses that study centers were made for this moment. From David Brooks’ NYT column just this morning: \n\"One of the most exciting things in American life today is that a humanistic renaissance is already happening on university campuses... I’m now seeing changes on campuses across America, from community colleges to state schools to the Ivies. The changes are coming in four buckets: First, a profusion of courses and programs that try to nurture character development and moral formation. Second, courses and programs on citizenship training and civic thought. Third, programs to help people learn to reason across difference. Fourth, courses that give students practical advice on how to lead a flourishing life.” \nNone of us knows what the coming years may bring, and there will surely continue to be challenges aplenty. Nevertheless, these are promising trends, and for this too we can say, \"Thanks be to God.\" \nIn Christ, \nKarl E.
