It filled the forest, \nclinging to the freshly sprung leaves and spindly branches and \ndampening the wisps of the hunter ’s fur cowl. His name was Achak, and he knelt low in a bed of trampled grass. His fingers were dry and cracked despite the moisture that filled the spring air. As he ran them along the thin green stalks, they sopped up the beaded water with the greed of a sponge. When he raised them to the dying light, they glistened with the telltale red of blood. \n“It’s dark. No froth,” Achak muttered. \nThe boy behind him shifted nervously.“Liver?” \n“Yes.” Achak wiped his fingers clean, leaving a faint streak across his patchwork trousers as he stood. \n“We should not go any further,” the boy insisted. He was Achak’s little brother, Hurrit. He was only a few years younger than Achak, but those were the years that mattered the most—the years that separated a boy from a man.“We’re too far west. The priest’s farm is close, and the town after that,” the boy went on. “If they catch us in the forest again, there will be trouble.” \n“You’re afraid of a priest?” Achak taunted, letting the rope in his hand slacken. The thin cur on the other end of it, so far content to huff lazily atthe spilled blood, felt the tension at his collar release. He bolted ahead, burying his long snout in the grass as he trailed the wounded bear. \nHurrit was too embarrassed to answer. He didn’t need to; the hesitation in his gait was enough to give away his apprehension as they continued. \nThe blood came often and in greater quantities as they went, so much so that the dog never once had to break from a brisk jog. The trail led away from the grassy clearing where Achak had ambushed the lumbering black beast and through a never-ending thicket of pine saplings. The bristly boughs grasped at the old flintlock in Achak’s hand, fighting to rip the weapon away as he crashed forward in the wake of the dog. \nEvening melted into the dull grey screen of nightfall. Soon the blood no longer stood out against the dappled browns of last year ’s leaves or the fresh green of the spring’s. The darkness meant nothing to the dog. He plowed on ahead, head bent low, huffing, grumbling, relentlessly pursuing the stench of his quarry. \n“Achak!” Hurrit’s call echoed from far off at Achak’s back. Achak did not slow. He had no doubt that the boy had fallen behind on purpose, as was his way. Hurrit was soft and easily frightened. An embarrassment, even for his young age, Achak often thought. He would let the boy find his own way home tonight. Perhaps the next time he might keep up. \nIn the darkness he didn’t see the dog come to a sudden halt before him. After a grunt and a yelp and a painful thump they were both splayed out on the wet leaves. The dog found his feet first, just barely escaping Achak’s furious swat.“Stupid dog! What are you doing?” \nOnly the darkness of the dog’s outline was visible in the night. His tail was tucked tight between his legs and a deep growl rumbled from behind barred teeth. Achak’s own nape tingled. He knew well enough not to second guess the creature’s instincts. Bringing the rifle to bear, he used the barrel to trace the dog’s line of sight out into the night. \nAhead, barely visible across a steep gully lined with fir and maple, the glow of flames cut throu","cbCailzkTkXxybI7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailzkTkXxybI7","pdf",6634459,286,"English","# Prologue","[{\"question\":\"What are Achak and Hurrit doing at the start of the prologue?\",\"answer\":\"Achak tracks a wounded black bear while Hurrit follows nearby, anxious about going too far and fearing trouble if caught.\"},{\"question\":\"Why does Achak become alert to something beyond the hunt?\",\"answer\":\"The forest’s sound fades, leaving only the rain, and he notices firelight ahead across a steep gully.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the presence of the fire suggest to Achak?\",\"answer\":\"Achak believes people who avoid being found often come with bounties or money, implying a dangerous group nearby.\"}]","Father - Douglass Hoover - Prologue | PDF",440]
