The boy who lived (Harry Potter) and the girl who volunteered (Katniss Everdeen) . All teenagers. All in the shadow of the Spider-Man, the first to bear the weight of the world during the most trying time of his life.  \nSuperheroes are but the latest in a series of modern mythology figures who need to uphold morality via epic adventures. This is a very long list, including westerns, samurai films, swashbucklers, all the way back to demigods like Hercules. They’re all escapist power fantasies, or to put it another way, they’re all tales about what happens when you have great power, and great responsibility.  \nTwo hundred years ago, the power fantasy du jour was the knight. Oneof the greatest of these chivalric romances was Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. Ivanhoe gave us the word “freelance.” It’s fitting that almost all superheroes of the present are made by freelancers, named after a fictional superhero of the past.  \nSpider-Man was made by two such freelancers, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee.
