\"The Case of the Counting Clls,\"(Family Matters,Spring 2000).Alex had turned down an invita-tion from his new friendsHank,Rogerand Timmy,to participatein a Saturday \"sniff party\"and had instead chosen to go with hisfather and his uncle to dig for fossils at Cabrillo Beach. \n9:00 A.M.Sunday morning.Alex had eaten breakfast, brushedhis teeth, washed his face and hands, and was headed for thefront door.As he passed the kitchen he told his mother,\"Mom,will you please tell Dad that I'm going over to Roger's to showhim and Timmy and Hank the fossils we dug out of the ciff atCabrillo Beach yesterday?I'll be back in a while to help with theyard work.See youlater.\" \n\"Okay.Just be careful,Alex,\"she said.As Alex got on his bikeat the front of the house, his mother carried her cup of coffee tothe back patio to join her husband, who was reading the Sundaypaper.\"Alex is off to show his friends the treasures you guysbrought home yesterday. He is so excited.\" \n\"You mean he has left already?Omigosh.Oh,wow! He is infor a shock.Look what I have just read.\"He pointed to a one-col-umn headline, and his wife read: \nLocal Boy Dies From Inhaling Drugs \nHenry Walters, age 14,eldest son of Mr.and Mrs.AbrahamWalters, died shortly afterinhaling spray from ordinary householdproducts.... \nWithout identifying the other two boys who had participated inthe episode, the article briefly mentioned the 911 call respondedto by paramedics and a statement by a local medical doctor onthe dangers of inhaling spray products.A special memorial ser-vice would be held in the Methodist Church that evening.\"Noneof us watched television last nightI am sure it must have beenon the news.Alex wil be completely unprepared,\"said his father. \n* \n9:30 A.M.Sunday.Alex wheeled his bike into the garage.Hisface was puffed, and his eyes were red from crying. As hewalked towards his parents,he looked disheveled and unkempt. His mother opened her arms to him and he rushed into herembrace. His father wrapped his arms about mother and child,\"We know, son,we know.We just saw it in the paper.\" \nAlex was trembling and tearful.\"I'm so scared.I'm so mixed \nup.Hank is dead. How could this happen?I don't know what todo.I am really scared.\" \n\"We understand Alex.Let's sit down. You sit beside your moth-er and I will get a washcloth and towel and give you a moment toget settled.\"Alex moved to the sofa, and his mother sat besidehim with her arm around his shoulder. When his father broughtthe wet washcloth and towel,Alex scrubbed his face and handsvigorously,as if trying to wash something away. When he haddried his face, his father said,\"Tell us what happened.\" \nAlex began in a monotone voice,so low that he was hard tohear.\"Well,when I got to Roger's I rang the bell and his dadcame to the door.Usually he has a big happy grin on his face, butthis time he looked different—very stern and quiet. He didn't sayanything when he opened the door but just pointed me in towardsRoger's room. When l pushed the door open,I saw Roger sittingon his bed with his head down between his knees, and when helooked up I could see he had been crying.I asked him what waswrong and seemed almost angry. He yelled,'Don't you know thatHank is dead!'I said,'What?'And he yelled again,'Doesn't yourfamily watch TV news or read the newspaper.Hank is dead!Ididn't know what to say.I just stood there. Then he said it again, more quietly,Hank is dead and I helped kill him!'I said,I don'tget it.What happened?' \n\"He let out a big sigh, and then he told me that he and Hankand Timmy went to the park, where those big trees form a circle. They were allalone—there was no one around. They hadbrought a whole bunch of stuff with them-Whiteout,model air-plane glue, some cleaning fluid, spray
