Please delete these notes before printing  \nFarming with Disabilities  \nPeople with disabilities can undertake many of the everyday tasks on a farm with a few adjustments to the workplace and a little help from their friends.  \nSeated work  \nIf someone has difficulty walking, there are many tasks that he  \nor she can perform while sitting down. For example, when it is time to harvest the fruits of the oil palm, if an able-bodied person is available to pick the bunches off the trees, a seated assistant can do the work of separating the fruit from the bunches.  \nMany other sorting and grading jobs can be performed while sitting down. Fruits and nuts, beans and peas can be graded by size, colour, degree of ripeness etc. They can be prepared for sun-drying or processing or packed into baskets or other containers for market.  \nIf only small-scale production is required, it should be possible for a seated worker to operate a hand-mill to grind nuts, beans, or grains to the desired consistency.  \nPreparing a good growing medium is another area where a seated assistant can do useful work, for example by sieving compost. Mixing compost and seeds together and putting them into pots is another task that can be done while sitting down. The seeds could be for vegetables or herbs, or tree seeds for starting a tree nursery. Placing the pots on a circular table which can move round on top of a central post fixed in the ground means that someone sitting on a chair or stool can easily keep them watered.  \nIf the farm would benefit from a greenhouse, a cheap option is to make one out of empty plastic bottles. A large quantity will be needed but in many parts of the world they are still being discarded in public spaces and can be collected free of charge.
