Entries clarify how AU reshapes canon, how angst, crack-fic, fluff, and freeform describe tone and narrative structure, and how canon and canon divergence establish alternative timelines. The glossary also explains relationship and categorization labels such as BL and Gen, plus narrative focus terms like character-centric and character study, and identifies practices including fix-it and character-bashing.","Fanfiction and Web Novels: Webinar \nGLOSSARY \nAlternate Universe (AU) : fanworks that change one or more elements of the source work’s canon. Broadly, an AU may transplant a given source work’s characters to a radically different setting, shift the genre in which their adventures occur, and/or alter one or more of their professions, goals, or backstories. The openness of AUs allows fans to stretch themselves creatively. \nAngst: a genre of stories with prevalent physical or, mainly, emotional torment of characters. Most stories with an angst description contain significant levels of characters feeling emotions such as fear, anxiety, or sadness. Such fics may also be designed to elicit such emotions in the readers. \nBadfic: fanfiction that is very badly written, characterized, structured, or all of the above. It can refer to fic written badly by accident, or fic written badly on purpose for amusement. \nBL: Japanese term, stands for Boys’Love; used by Japanese publishing industry to categorize works focusing on male/male relationships marketed at women. Historically, these works were referred to as June, but most commercial works are now called BL. The change in terminology was probably due to the negative connotations of the term yaoi and the association with a specific publication of the term June. Note that BL can also be used as a content descriptor/trope term. When used this way, BL works cross multiple marketing categories. \nCanon Divergence: fanfiction set in a universe that diverges relatively narrowly from canon, with a point of departure in a character's backstory or even during canon. The changes made to canon usually answer a question like \"What if character X lived instead of died?\" or \"What if character Y didn't meet character Z until later?\" \nCanon: a source, or sources, considered authoritative by the fannish community. In other words, canon is what fans agree \"actually\" happened in a film, TV show, novel, comic book, or concert tour. Specific sources considered canon may vary even within a specific fandom. \nCharacter Study: a psychological profile; fanfiction that explores a character’s psyche in depth; a story that focuses on a single character rather than a relationship. \nCharacter-bashing: refers to a practice in which an author or reader who does not like a character or pairing consciously or unconsciously demonstrates their hatred for the character/pairing within the story. When character bashing, for example, an author may rewrite a canonical character out-of-character as an idiot, evil villain, or have other characters mention their dislike within the story. \nCharacter-centric: fics that focus mainly on a single character throughout the whole of the story. \nFanfiction and Web Novels: Webinar \nCrack-fic: stories in which completely ridiculous, unbelievable or insane things occur, often without reasonable explanation but great enjoyment. Are generally written shamelessly and with no excuse beyond a desire to have fun. \nCrossover: stories in which the characters, premises, or settings of more than one fandom coincide. Crossovers may consist of a complete blending of universes or only a slight, passing connection. Knowledge of both (or multiple) fandoms isnot always necessary, but generally helpful to fully understanding the story. \nDrabble: flash fiction or micro fiction. Traditionally, a drabble is a piece of fiction that is exactly 100 words long. However, it is not uncommon for people to label any extremely short piece of writing a drabble. This is known to irritate some readers, while others consider the distinction unimportant. \nFanfiction (also abbreviated to fanfic, fic or ff) is fictional writing that borrows characters, settings, or other intellectual properties from a pre-existing work of fiction (e.g. novel, film, TV series, anime, manga, music video, game) . AND, is a work of fiction, written or drawn by a fan, that uses celebrated real-life figures as characters. \nFanpoetry: fanfi","cbCaiggv6qAIMPCx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiggv6qAIMPCx","pdf",266957,1,20,"English","en",105,"# Glossary\n## Fanfiction Genres and Tone\n## Canon, Universe, and Structure\n## Character Focus and Reader Practices\n## Relationship and Content Categories","[{\"question\":\"What does AU mean in fanfiction?\",\"answer\":\"AU stands for Alternate Universe, describing fanworks that change one or more elements of the source work’s canon, including setting, genre, or character backstories and goals.\"},{\"question\":\"How is canon different from canon divergence?\",\"answer\":\"Canon refers to source material the fan community treats as authoritative.
