Family Resilience:A Framework for Clinical Practice\n\nFROMA WALSH,PH.D. \nThis article presents an ouerview of afamily resilience framework developedfor clinical practice, and describes itsadvantages.Drawing together findingsfrom studies of individual resilience andresearch on effective family functioning, key processes in family resilience areoutlined in three domains:family beliefsystems, organizational patterns,andcommunication/problem-solving.Clinicalpractice applications are describedbriefly to suggest the broad utility of thisconceptual framework for interventionand prevention efforts to strengthenfamilies facing serious life challenges. \nremarkable is that many others emergestrengthened and more resourceful. \nResilience—the ability to withstand andrebound from disruptive life challenges—has become an important concept in mentalhealth theory and research over the pasttwo decades. It involves dynamic processesfostering positive adaptation within thecontext of significant adversity(Luthar,Cicchetti,&Becker,2000).These strengthsand resources enable individuals andfamilies to respond successfully to crisesand persistent challenges and to recoverand grow from those experiences(Cowan,Cowan,&Schultz,1996).Some who havesuffered trauma become blocked fromgrowth or trapped in a victim position.Incontrast, resilience involves key processesover time that foster the ability to“strugglewell,\"surmount obstacles, and go on to liveand love fully. \nFam Proc 42:1-18,2003 \n## A FAMILY RESILIENCE FRAMEWORK\n\nThe concept of family resilience extendsI our understanding of healthy familyfunctioning to situations of adversity.Although some families are shatteredby crisis or chronic stresses, what is \n## The Relational Context ofIndividual Resilience\n\nMost research to date has focusedon individual resilience. In the 1980s,increasing evidence was found that thesame adversity may result in differentoutcomes, which challenged the prevailingdeterministic assumption that traumaticexperiences, especially in childhood, areinevitably damaging. In surveying thesefindings,Rutter(1987)noted that nocombination of risk factors, regardlessof severity, gave rise to disorder in more \nFroma Walsh,School of Social ServiceAdministration and Department of Psychiatry, andCenter for Family Health,University of lives were shattered, others overcamesimilar high-risk conditions and were ableto lead loving and productive lives and toraise their children well.Studies found, for instance, that most abused children early pregnancy, needsfor mental health services,or trouble inschool or with the law. However, one third ofthose at risk had developed into competent, caring, and confident young adults, with thecapacity harsh backgrounds;more were stablymarried and employed, and fewer weretraumatized by a hurricane that destroyedmuch of the island.Of note, several whohad been poorly functioning in adolescenceturned their lives around in adulthood, mostoften crediting supportive relationshipsor religious involvement. These findingsshowed that despite troubled childhood orteen years, there is potential for developingresilience across the life course. \nTo account for these differences, earlystudies focused on personal traits forresilience,or hardiness, reflecting thedominant cultural ethos of the “ruggedindividual”(Luthar &Ziegler,1991;Walsh,1996).Initially,resilience was viewed asinnate,as in the character armor of
