They kept them on a shelf in the mudroom, along with the fishing gear.  \nDad repeated the same thing every day as they set out. He was like that.  \nSometimes Toby repeated the same questions too. He wasn’t nervous, like Dad. He just liked it when they talked about things. And if you wanted to get Dad talking, you talked about practical things.“What if a dragon comes?”  \n“You won’t see it. So, you won’t be able to shoot it. We can’t get very far from the house. We can’t just go get supplies. Don’t waste bullets. If we stay out in the open too long, we’re dead. So, don’t waste time.”  \nToby had never been able to just go get supplies. All he knew about doing something like that was what Dad had told him about the past, and what he’d read in books. He knew it involved traveling to a building and giving the people there money so they’d let you take stuff.  \nIt was hard to imagine how easy the world must have been. Money was just paper and pieces of metal. Toby had some just lying around in the house. He’d gladly given up money for good food or a new fishing pole.  \n“Why not waste bullets?” Toby asked.“We don’t see very much food anyway, not the kind you shoot.”  \n“Yes, most of the land animals are gone. But we don’t know how long we’ll be trapped. What if some animal adapts to the dragons and is able to multiply? We’ll wish we had the bullets we wasted. And what if bad people show up? We’ll wish we had the bullets we wasted.”  \nThe adapting animal was something Toby could imagine. Wasn’t that what he and Dad were, adapting animals? But the idea of seeing other people seemed nearly impossible. He was twelve and had seen no one but Dad. That was, unless you counted the handful of human bodies they’d come across. They never looked real. They looked like coal someone had molded into skeletons. Every time he saw remains, he wondered why they were there. Why hadn’t the dragons eaten what they’d cooked. Were they killing just to kill?  \nThey left the safety of the mudroom and went outside, rifles on their shoulders, fishing gear in their hands.  \nDad looked around at the sky as they moved. Toby didn’t think he was really looking, though. It was more like he was just moving his ears around, trying to lock in on sounds.  \n“I miss the birds,” Toby said.“They taste better than fish.”  \n“You have to be quiet outside,” Dad said.“Sound is a distraction. There used to be cars on the roads. There used to be the sounds of oil pumps. These things distracted people.
