Research examines whether ETS in China increase corporate greenwashing, using a staggered difference-in-differences framework comparing covered versus non-covered firms around ETS implementation. Results show ETS significantly incentivize greenwashing, driven by higher abatement investment needs, worsened financial distress, and stronger effects under greater financing constraints, volatility, competitive pressure, smaller size, lower R&D, and weaker environmental regulation.
