Except for when I wanted space.  \nLike tonight.  \nThe hallway to my chambers was quiet at night. Flickers of light threw shadows against the ornate walls that were covered in rich, earthy colours, gold trimming and scripture markings, the code by which every citizen in Egypt lived. In the torchlight, Karrept’s skin shimmered. Dark chestnutcoloured eyes stared back at me as his skilful hands pulled me flush against his body. I gasped and wrapped my arms around his neck. He held me tight, his strong arms making me feel safe and wanted. I smiled as I leaned up for the kiss that I knew was coming.  \nKarrept kissed me like there wasn’t anyone else for him—and there wasn’t.  \nHe was a priest breaking a sacred law.  \n‘What are you doing to me?’ I whispered as I broke off the kiss.‘Driving you insane,’ he replied with a smile. ‘Is it working?’  \nI laughed.‘Yes, but you have to stop. Aten will be on his way soon.’  \n‘Do not be so absurd. He will not be back for days. We have time. So much time, Nefertiti.’  \nMy name on his lips sent a shiver down my spine; he always had that kind of effect on me. I sighed and pushed him away. He took two steps forward and spun on his heel so he was facing me. Karrept walked backwards and I grinned as I tilted my head and took in every inch of him. His dark curls, the heated gaze that mapped my body, those kissable lips that made me shiver with anticipation.  \nIn the distance, I could hear the shuffle of feet. Even though I knew it was just Karrept’s understudies, my heart leapt at every sound—maybe this would be the time that Aten caught us.  \nAten was not stupid, though. My husband would have seen the small instances when Karrept and I touched for longer than we should have or when we spoke to one another more than necessary. Aten’s superhuman senses would have picked up the differences in scent when we had been in the same chamber together, yet he said nothing.  \nI could not stay away from Karrept.
