It analyzes why many depictions do not aim for minute naturalistic accuracy, compares early Qagar examples with clearer textile structure, and contrasts artistic choices against Arabic literary descriptions of angelic scale, hair, and multiple faces. The study also explores gender ambiguity in angel representations, showing how jewelry, hair styling, and neckline cues can signal male or female figures, reinforced by links to Classical Mediterranean and Sasanid visual traditions and by Qur’anic references to patterned silks in Paradise.","# FABRICS FIT FOR ANGELS\n\nPatricia L.Baker \nLondon \nWithin Islamic painting the depiction of angels generally occurs in the context oftemporal power and authority,of religious narrative and of the garden, both heaven-ly and terrestrial. It is their wings which identify their inclusion within the pictorialcomposition rather than any distinguishing attire but, that said,it appears that whilethe Islamic artists employed the visual metaphor of luxurious contemporary courtfabrics to evoke the image of heavenly splendour and magnificence, they were lessinclined to dress these heavenly beneficent beings in types of garments too closelyassociated with the styling of court robes. \nAs is well recognised the Islamic painter was rarely overwhelmingly concernedwith recording accurately, naturalistically and minutely every detail in his pictorialcomposition.Few depictions display such clarity of garment structure as certain earlyQagar paintings, such as those formerly in the Amery collection(Falk 1972),whichreveal the use of bias cutting, types of fastenings and braiding, seaming details as wellas clearly portraying textile patterning and texture.Furthermore it is apparent thatfew Islamic artists perceived that it was a requirement in such depictions to reflectthe accepted literary notions regarding angels.Arabic writers, such as a-Tabari(d.923 AD)and al-Qazwini(d.1283 AD),described their immense size and stature withnumerous wings, anything from four as possessed by Israfil who willsound thetrumpet on the Day of Reckoning to four thousand as with Izra'il,the angel ofdeath. One such wing could easily,we are told, cover a quarter of the earth's surfacewhen unfurled.Litle concerted effort is made by the artist to represent the scale ofthese enormous wings nor of the angelic body covered with saffron hairs, nor themultiple faces of these divine beings positioned at various places on their body towatch humanity¹.However,as always, there are a few exceptions, one of the mostimportant being the first-half of the 15th century Uighur manuscript of the Mirag-namah (Bibliothèque Nationale (BN),Paris,Suppl.turc 190,).In this work the angelsare frequently depicted on a larger scale that the Prophet Muhammad and thereappears to be a deliberate wish to convey a feeling of a distinct celestial world, peopled by such super-normal divine creatures, different from ordinary terrestrialbeings. \nTHE ARABIST.BUDAPEST STUDIES INARABIC 28-29 (2008) \nhttps://doi.org/10.58513/ARABIST.2008.28-29.1 \n2 \nThere is also a matter of gender:the stories explaining the fall of the angels Harūtand Marut suggest that these beings possessed some masculine sexual feelings;indeedit was yielding to such emotions that resulted in their fall from heavenly Grace.Butalthough theologians and philosophers agreed that angels could weep, feel annoyanceand required nourishment (albeit with spiritual food and drink),the matter of theirgender does not appear to have been much discussed, let alone decided.Suchambiguity regarding gender is reflected in a number of Islamic manuscript depictions. However,it must be said that our knowledge of the differences in male and femaledress, especially of the early and medieval periods,in the Islamic Middle East isimprecise²,and identification of gender tends to be based on jewellery,hair-stylingrather than specific costume details such as neckline, robe closures etc..Those imagesshowing angels confirming divine affirmation of temporal power, holding the royalbaldachin or canopy over the head of the ruler,as in the frontispiece of Kitab al-Agani,Mosul c.1218-9(Millet Kütüphane,Istanbul,F.Efendi 1566 fol.1r,),appearto depict female angels judging by the ear ornaments,hair-styling and garmentneckline.Such figures are derived from winged Victories from the ClassicalMediterranean world and Sasanid Iran,as at Taq-i Bustan where the female genderof the Victory angels is unambiguous. In the early 14th century Gami at-tawarih(Edinburgh University Library, and the Nasser D.Khalili C","cbCaijkBCvGwChAv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijkBCvGwChAv","pdf",583110,1,17,"English","en",105,"# Fabrics Fit for Angels\n## Angel depictions and visual metaphors in Islamic art\n## Limits of naturalistic accuracy and manuscript exceptions\n## Gender ambiguity in angel imagery\n## Links to earlier Mediterranean and Sasanid traditions","[{\"question\":\"How do Islamic painters visually identify angels in artworks?\",\"answer\":\"Angels are primarily identified through their wings rather than specific garments.
