The introduction traces Robert Rahula’s life across Barcelona, Virginia, Menorca, Madrid, and later the United States and Panama, including La Movida Madrileña influences. The poems draw from earlier books (2014–2017) and portray polyamorous, realpolitik, sometimes dark but never despairing realities worldwide.","…1an1…i4………… \n5M1 \nLVdX3VMHva \nZAI O \n# \nThe 63 poems in this collection all center on the expatriateexperience. An expatriate -or expat -is more than someone whosimply lives outside of their native country. The word derives from theFrench expatrier(and originally from the Latin expatriatus)meaning tobanish, and evokes a feeling of being forced out of one's homeland.assuming one ever felt at home to start with. These are the poems of thewanderer, the outcast, the immigrant, the pilgrim, the disenfranchised, the drifter, the wayfarer, and the nomad. \nIn one sense,Robert Rahula has been an expatriate all hislife.Born Francisco Roberto Rahula Mendez in 1946 in Barcelona toa Spanish mother and American father,he was sent at an early age togrow up on his grandfather’s farm in Virginia. However,in 1960 hereturned to Spain,to the island of Menorca,to live with his mother’srelatives.By 1980 he was living in Madrid and totally immersed in LaMovida Madrilena, that intellectual and counter-culture explosion thatoccurred in Spain after the death of Franco. He spent much of histime in bars and cafes where he was influenced by such artists andwriters as Carlos Argüello and Francisco Umbral.Eventually,Robertstarted performing his own poetry and began to attract a following.In1993,his first book of poetry,Aspectos de Luigi, was published in Spainto good reviews. Some of his success was due to the new openness tobisexual and polyamorous lifestyles of La Movida Madrilenia-themeswhich were amply expressed in Robert's poetry. \nBetween 1993 and 2000,ten more books of Robert's poetry, novels,or essays were published in Spain. However,by 2001,hehad completely disappeared from Madrid, and was rumored to havemoved to France. In 2012,he returned to the United States and startedpublishing novels and poetry in English. In 2014,he moved to Panamaand began work on a series of novels about expats living in the smalltown of Villa Rosario. \nThe poems in this collection originally appeared in five booksof poetry that Robert wrote between 2014 and 2017,but they representhis lifetime of experiences traveling through Europe, the United States,Mexico, and Central America. They are unapologetically polyamorousand realpolitik, occasionally dark, but never despairing. They areemblematic of the expatriate experience everywhere. \nTABLE OF CONTENTS \nArriving in Amsterdam………………………………………………………………1 \nThe Humbling
