making its way intoour homes in never-ending forms,we can contemplate withpleasure the fact that there is still a lively enthusiasm for cagebirds. This passion is certainly a diversion for the jadedinhabitants of our large towns and cities, who dream ofescape to the peace and quiet of the countryside,an escapewhich is often too short. It must be said, however, that fromtime immemorial, and in every country of the world, birdlovers, whether rich or poor, have always been numerous. \nFor instance, during Elizabethan times, many people weredevoted to cage birds, including the Earl of Leicester, whosecollection at Kenilworth so impressed Queen Elizabeth.Weare told that\"the castle had its indoor attractions, one ofwhich was a great aviary filled with both familiar and exoticbirds. The mesh was stretched between columns whosecapitals were painted with a trompe d'oeil of rubies, diamonds, emeralds and sapphires of enormous size,in gold settings.\"* \nIn Britain and America today, many thousands ofpeople keep birds as pets, owing to the restriction on dogsand cats enforced by many landlords. In fact since 1948 saleshave increased, and many more varieties of birds seem to beavailable from pet shops. \n## 2.CAGES\n\nLittle marvels of grace and beauty, birds can charm usin many ways.Bird fanciers have their own particular prefer-ences,as regards the choice of their feathered 'boarders'.Some look for brilliant plumage, others for enchanting song.Certain people are interested in the way in which nests are \n*Elizabeth Jenkins,Elizabeth the Great,London,Gollancz,1958. \nbuilt,and the curious delve into the mysteries of breeding. \nBefore anything else, however, there is the question ofchoosing a dwelling for the selected bird—in other words, itscage. The history of the cage constitutes a long technologicalstudy down the ages and throughout the world, for formerly, and in every country,it was constructed with at least astylistic resemblance to the bird's natural habitation.Simplymade of wood,it was decorated with primitive sculpturescommon to African tribes. In the East it was luxuriouslyexecuted in bamboo, and embellished with precious materials. In Malaysia it was formed in a spherical shape of fine wicker-work.In North Africa it became an attractive dwelling placein the shape of a mosque,in Russia it became the Isba ofnational bird fanciers, and in Eastern Asia a circle of net. \nThe different regions of each country have given theirparticular stamp to cages made there, the materials andmethods of working being peculiar to each region. Thus, incertain museums in Brittany, one can see ancient cages inthe same dark and twisted wood as the old spinning wheels. In the Austrian Tyrol,in mountain-dwellers’homes,therestill exist the iron cages long used to shelter the Cross-Bill.In the museums of Saxony are pretty porcelain cages fittedwith mirrors, and finely decorated with gorgeous flowers.Inthe Netherlands and in Denmark, clock cages from the pastcan still be seen in the shape of a cone, and made from wroughtcopper, the underside forming a black and white dial on whichtwo hands mark the hours. Thus it was possible to admirethe birds while watching the time slip by.The magnificentChateau of Frederiksburg near Copenhagen,nowadaysconver","cbCaiqjdsOlrspwF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqjdsOlrspwF","pdf",3754039,102,"English","# EXOTIC CAGE BIRDS\n##
