The participants of this study were 816 Korean students who responded to the WIFI questionnaire. \nFindings: The results of principal component analysis indicated that the following five attributes about mathematics and mathematics pedagogy were valued by Korean students: understanding, connections, fun, accuracy, and efficiency. These attributes were further analyzed with relation to student gender, school system, and student confidence. \nCorresponding author: \nJeongSuk Pang, Korea National University of Education, Taeseongtabyeon-ro 250, Gangnae-myeon, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungbuk 28173, Korea. \nEmail: [jeongsuk@knue.ac.kr](jeongsuk@knue.ac.kr) \nCreative Commons Non Commercial CC BY-NC: This article is distributed under the terms of the Creative \nCommons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 License ([https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/)) which permits non-commercial use, reproduction and distribution of the work without further permission provided the original work is attributed as specified on the SAGE and Open Access pages ([https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/open-access-at-sage](https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/open-access-at-sage)). \nOriginality/Value: Korean students’ valuing of understanding and connections is noteworthy. It is hoped that the findings of this study might explain Korean students’ exceptional performance despite a generally low affective mode, and extending this further, how values in mathematics education might be a useful construct to help us make sense of the observed mismatch globally between high performance and low affect. \nKeywords \nConnections, Korean students, student values, understanding, values and valuing Date received: 17 December 2019; accepted: 9 May 2020 \nIntroduction \nKorean students have been among the top performers in international mathematics assessment. Fourth graders came in third and eighth graders came in second in the latest Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015 (Mullis et al., 2016) . The 15-year-old students continued their high performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 (OECD, 2019a) . Together, these mean that not only do Korean students excel in understanding mathematical knowledge and applying related skills—which are assessed by TIMSS—they are also among the best in the world when it comes to students’ ability to apply relevant knowledge and skills in novel mathematical problem situations, which is typically the kind of questions that are featured in the PISA studies. \nYet, at the same time, like most if not all their peers elsewhere, Korean students do not generally display positive affect toward mathematics. They reported almost the lowest confidence and interest in mathematics in comparison with their counterparts pa","cbCaidULDedKvkoL","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidULDedKvkoL","pdf",328438,22,"English","en",105,"# Abstract\n## Purpose\n## Design/Approach/Methods\n## Findings\n## Originality/Value\n# Introduction\n## Korea’s performance in international assessments\n## Negative affect toward mathematics\n## East Asian Learner Paradox and explanations\n## Policy efforts and remaining challenges","[{\"question\":\"What problem does the study address about Korean students’ mathematics performance?\",\"answer\":\"The study addresses the unclear relationship between cognition and affect by examining why Korean students can achieve excellent mathematics results despite negative attitudes toward the subject.\"},{\"question\":\"How was the study conducted?\",\"answer\":\"The study used data from Korea’s participation in the international WIFI questionnaire, with 816 Korean students answering items about valued aspects of mathematics learning and teaching.\"},{\"question\":\"Which attributes did students value regarding mathematics and pedagogy?\",\"answer\":\"Principal component analysis showed that Korean students valued understanding, connections, fun, accuracy, and efficiency.\"}]","Excellent Mathematical Performance Despite “Negative” Affect of Students in Korea - The Values Perspective | PDF",1792092163,55,{"code":4,"msg":82,"data":83},"ok",{"site_id":75,"language":74,"slug":84,"title":65,"keywords":85,"description":66,"schema_data":86,"social_meta":140,"head_meta":142,"extra_data":144,"updated_unix":145},"excellent-mathematical-performance-despite-negative-affect-of-students-in-korea-the-values-perspective","",{"@graph":87,"@context":139},[88,102,122],{"@type":89,"itemListElement":90},"BreadcrumbList",[91,95,97,100],{"item":92,"name":93,"@type":94,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":96,"name":9,"@type":94,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":98,"name":40,"@type":94,"position":99},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/research-report/",3,{"item":101,"name":65,"@type":94,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/excellent-mathematical-performance-despite-negative-affect-of-students-in-korea-the-values-perspective/601199/",{"url":101,"name":65,"@type":103,"image":104,"author":109,"headline":65,"publisher":111,"fileFormat":114,"inLanguage":74,"description":66,"dateModified":115,"datePublished":116,"encodingFormat":114,"isAccessibleForFree":117,"interactionStatistic":118},"DigitalDocument",{"url":105,"@type":106,"width":107,"height":108},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/excellent-mathematical-performance-despite-negative-affect-of-students-in-korea-the-values-perspective/601199.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":63,"@type":110},"Person",{"url":92,"name":112,"@type":113},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-11-04","2026-10-15",true,{"@type":119,"interactionType":120,"userInteractionCount":29},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":121},"ViewAction",{"@type":123,"mainEntity":124},"FAQPage",[125,131,135],{"name":126,"@type":127,"acceptedAnswer":128},"What problem does the study address about Korean students’ mathematics performance?","Question",{"text":129,"@type":130},"The study addresses the unclear relationship between cognition and affect by examining why Korean students can achieve excellent mathematics results despite negative attitudes toward the subject.","Answer",{"name":132,"@type":127,"acceptedAnswer":133},"How was the study conducted?",{"text":134,"@type":130},"The study used data from Korea’s participation in the international WIFI questionnaire, with 816 Korean students answering items about valued aspects of mathematics learning and teaching.",{"name":136,"@type":127,"acceptedAnswer":137},"Which attributes did students value regarding mathematics and pedagogy?",{"text":138,"@type":130},"Principal component analysis showed that Korean students valued understanding, connections, fun, accuracy, and efficiency.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":101,"og:type":141,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":112,"og:description":66},"article",{"robots":143,"canonical":101},"index,follow",{"doc_id":61,"site_id":75},1792210504]
