No one would have expected it of her, a shy child with little education. However, Burney’s father, Charles, was a successful musician who introduced his children to a number of artists and intellectuals, including Dr. Samuel Johnson. Under their tutelage, Burney became an avid reader, and although her father was opposed to the idea, she began to write prose. By age fifteen, Burney had penned a novel, The History of Caroline Evelyn, which she later burned, and started a diary that she would continue to write in for seventy-two years.  \nThe early manuscript that Burney destroyed and the accumulation of her journal entries and letters laid the foundation for Evelina; or, the History of a Young Lady ’s Entrance into the World, a novel that was published anonymously in 1778. Written in a first-person, epistolary form, the novel is a collection of letters sent from a young girl in London to a gentleman in the country that was praised by the London literary establishment for its fresh and humorous depiction of society’s manners and morals. As a result of Evelina ’s immense popularity—it was a bestseller, reprinted four times in two years—Burney could no longer remain anonymous, and she was welcomed into London’s literary circles.  \nSpurred by her newfound fame, Burney completed a satiric play, The Witlings, in 1779, but her father denounced it, and the play was neither published nor produced. Cecilia; or, Memoirs of an Heiress (1782) was Burney’s second novel, and although she struggled with a more complex plot and a style and tone different from that of her earlier success, it only increased Burney’s celebrity. The third-person narrative tellingly concerns issues of money and marriage, which were of supreme importance to the  \naging Burney, as her family worried about her unmarried status and financial insecurity.  \nIn 1786, Queen Charlotte offered Burney a court position as the Second Keeper of the Robes, and upon her father ’s insistence, Burney accepted. The job proved tedious and exhausting, and Burney sorely missed the society that inspired her writing. Apart from her journals and letters, Burney wrote tragedies during her time at court, none of which received major attention. After five years, Burney became ill and was released from service. She devoted more than one thousand pages of her posthumously published diary to her duties at court, providing an insider ’s account of the royal lifestyle.  \nSoon thereafter Burney met and married Alexandre d’Arblay, a poor French exile. Their happy marriage countered their precarious financial situation, and in 1794, Burney gave birth to their son, Alexander. Burney again took up her lucrative pen and published a third novel, Camilla; or, A Picture of Youth (1796), which she was allowed to dedicate to the queen. She had followed the romantic formula set forth in her previous novels, and Camilla won popular, if not critical, acclaim. During this prosperous time in her life, Burney worked on several unpublished comedies as well.  \nBurney’s husband returned to France in 1801 to reestablish himself in the French army, and she followed him one year later. She was forced to stay there for ten years due to the war between England and France. Diaries and letters attest to her memorable experiences as an expatriate, including social calls on Madame de Lafayette.
