fullyaware of the importance of Catholic reading.Schools and parisheswill hold exhibits;publishers will advertise;circulation managerswill launch subscription drives;sermons will be preached. All thestops will be pulled out in a concerted effort to win over a largernumber of Catholic readers. This in turn makes every editor dreamthat this increased awareness will result in increased subscription orders. After a few years in the business,I realize that this is a great dreamand nothing more.In more out-of-this-world moments,editors,es-pecially of smaller publications, conjure up the wild phantasy thateach subscriber will go out and “sell”the magazine to \"just one”newreader. In one grand swoop this would double circulation—ampleproof that February can produce temporary instability in editors—sobeware. \nEvery magazine has its faithful core of readers and promoters-—God bless them every one—who stay with the magazine year in andyear out, read it,and think highly of it.But in general, the facts oflife are quite different. \nThe life and growth of all magazines, even the best, are precariousNo editor can say,\"Once I've got a subscriber,I'll never lose him, because my publication is so good he'll never give it up.\"”Subscriberscome in many sizes and shapes, with various tastes and temperaments, and they are won by a variety of techniques.Any one of these factorsmakes the chance of renewal somewhat less than certain. It takes agreat deal of effort, time and money to win new subscribers, and justas much of the same to keep even a part of them(a 65%renewal rateis good and keeps the editor's ulcers relatively inactive). \nThis is not because everyone who subscribes is like a reluctant dragon.Competition these days is keen even among Catholic publications, not \nto mention the pressure exerted by our secular friends. There is noth-ing wrong with good competition. It forces editors to keep in stepwith the times,to offer to their readers the best possible in content andpresentation. \nThe most important steps that Catholic Press Mon","cbCaiold3E1iP4EK","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiold3E1iP4EK","pdf",2741554,66,"English","# Editor's Page\n## Blueprint for the
