6  \nThe Eucharistic Congress will recall the world in general,and India inparticular,to an awareness of spiritual values,pointing out to men immersedin the cares of the material world that the glory of man ultimately redoundsto the glory of God,for “Adoration is as necessary to a state as labor is,as the national economy is,and human society can no more dispense withthe Bread of God than with the bread of man.\"  \nIndeed,that is how Eucharistic Congresses started.It was to combat therationalism and liberalism of the eighteenth century,that the first Inter-national Eucharistic Congress was held at Lille in France in the year 1881.  \nSince then thirty-seven Congresses have been held in various parts of theworld.It has been a characteristic of all these Congresses that they havemet modern man in the world in which he lives,and have not offered hima religion that is an escape from reality.  \nThe many new nations that have recently come into being are anxious tobegin a new life,and to make their own distinctive contribution to the newworld of today.Among them stands India,where the Congress is being held,a country with an ancient tradition that all renewal must begin with a re-newal of self.  \nNow,as in the days of early Christianity,the Church needs witnesses morethan apologists.If the presence of the Christian in the world is to act asthe leaven in the dough,as the light of the world,as the salt of the earth,theleaven needs intense vitality,the light must shine,and the salt that has lostits savor must regain it.  \n# EFFECTS OF CONGRESS ON ALL CATHOLICS\n\nWhat is expected of each one of us?The theme set for the Congress,which will be taking place after the sessions of the Second Vatican Council,is The Eucharist and the New Man.\"As
