F. Kurose, K.W. Ross. All Rights Reserved \nComputer Networking: A Topdown Approach Featuring the Internet, 3rd edition. \nHaving gotten our feet wet with the Ethereal packet sniffer in the introductory lab, we’re now ready to use Ethereal to investigate protocols in operation. In this lab, we’ll explore several aspects of the [HTTP protocol:](HTTP protocol:) the basic GET/response interaction, [HTTP](HTTP)[ ](HTTP)message formats, retrieving large HTML files, retrieving HTML files with embedded objects, and [HTTP authentication and security. Before beginning these](HTTP authentication and security. Before beginning these) labs, you might want to review Section 2.2 of the text. \n1. The Basic [HTTP GET/response](HTTP GET/response) interaction \nLet’s begin our exploration of [HTTP by downloading a very simple HTML file-one](HTTP by downloading a very simple HTML file-one) that is very short, and contains no embedded objects. Do the following: \n1. Start up your web browser. \n2. Start up the Ethereal packet sniffer, as described in the Introductory lab (but don’t yet begin packet capture). Enter “[http](http)”(just the letters, not the quotation marks) in the display-filter-specification window, so that only captured [HTTP messages](HTTP messages)[ ](HTTP messages)[will be displayed later in the packet-listing window.](will be displayed later in the packet-listing window.) (We’re only interested in the [HTTP protocol here](HTTP protocol here), and don’t want to see the clutter of all captured packets). \n3. Wait a bit more than one minute (we’ll see why shortly), and then begin Ethereal packet capture. \n4. Enter the following to your browser [http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/](http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/HTTP-ethereal-file1.html)[HTTP-ethereal-file1.html](http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/HTTP-ethereal-file1.html)[ ](http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/HTTP-ethereal-file1.html)[Your browser should display the very simple](Your browser should display the very simple), one-line HTML file. \n5. Stop Ethereal packet capture. \nYour Ethereal window should look similar to the window shown in Figure 1. If you are unable to run Ethereal on a live network connection, you can download a packet trace that was created when the steps above were followed.1 \n1 Download the zip file [http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/ethereal-traces.zip](http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/ethereal-traces.zip and extract)[ and extract](http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/ethereal-traces.zip and extract) the file [http](http)ethereal-trace-1. The traces in this zip file were collected by Ethereal running on one of the author’s computers, while performing the steps indicated in the Ethereal lab. Once you have downloaded the trace, \nFigure 1: Ethereal Display after [http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/](http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/) [HTTP-ethereal](HTTP-ethereal)file1.html has been retrieved by your browser \nThe example in Figure 1 shows in the packet-listing window that two [HTTP messages](HTTP messages)[ ](HTTP messages)[were captured: the GET message](were captured: the GET message) ([from your](from your) browser to the gaia.cs.umass.edu web server) and the response message from the server to your browser. The packet-contents window shows details of the selected message (in this case the [HTTP GET message](HTTP GET message), which is highlighted in the packet-listing window). Recall that since the [HTTP message](HTTP message)[ ](HTTP message)was carried inside a TCP segment, which was carried inside an IP datagram, which was carried within an Ethernet frame, Ethereal displays the Frame, Ethernet, IP, and TCP packet information as well. We want to minimize the amount of non-[HTTP data](HTTP data)[ ](HTTP data)displayed (we’re interested in [HTTP here](HTTP here), and will be investigating these other protocols is later labs), so make sure the boxes at t","cbCaivUeTiyFogC6","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivUeTiyFogC6","pdf",210988,"English","# The Basic HTTP GET/response interaction\n## Step-by-step lab procedure\n## Inspecting captured HTTP messages and answering questions","[{\"question\":\"What is the main goal of this Ethereal HTTP lab?\",\"answer\":\"Use Ethereal to capture and inspect HTTP protocol behavior by examining the HTTP GET request and the server’s response for a retrieved HTML file.\"},{\"question\":\"How do you limit captured traffic to HTTP messages in Ethereal?\",\"answer\":\"Enter \\\"http\\\" in the display filter specification window so only HTTP messages are shown in the packet listing.\"},{\"question\":\"Which details about HTTP are students asked to extract from the captured GET and response messages?\",\"answer\":\"They identify HTTP versions (browser and server), accepted languages, client and server IP addresses, the returned status code, last-modified time, and the number of bytes in the response content.\"}]","Ethereal Lab - HTTP - Version 1.0 | PDF",18]
