interesting subjectof Essex Dialect it would perhaps be as well to try andgive in as brief a form as possible some definition of thething I am discussing, the word“dialect”itself. \nA few words may suffice to clear the air and help toremove some misconceptions about this word.Do notbe afraid that this is going to be what is known in modernLondon dialect as\"dull stuff.\"Itis really anessentialpartof the understanding of the meaning of the word.It willhelp to give what I call a bird's-eye view of the subject, some insight into the underlying cause that determinesand modifies a dialect and differentiates one form ofdialect from another. In itself it is really an extremelyinteresting and fascinating subject, and I am only sorrythat I can spare but a few brief moments to giving someintroduction which may possibly enable you to pursuethe subject further for yourselves. \nBroadly speaking, the study of dialects, which may bedescribed as the older and purer forms of speech survivingin our country, can roughly be divided into the etymologywhich deals with the source and derivation of the wordsthemselves and is a well defined and exact science, andthe psychology, the under-lying,distinctive character ofthe spoken word, the intonation, quality of tone, rise andfall of the voice, and the general spirit infusing it whichmay be due to a variety of causes,a certain quickness \nin the perception of what we call a sense of humour forinstance,or an equally amusing lack of it,a sense of whatwe call“canniness,”such as infuses the slow broaddialect of Yorkshire,or a sense of sharp-wittedness,bestexampled by the quick bantering voice of the Londoncockney.I take these as well known and well recognisedexamples, but their number could be multiplied a thousandfold and to each district it would be possible to assigna definite pervading psychology, and this charac-teristic psychology has a very definite meaning andderivation. It derives from something. It may derivefrom many well authenticated sources such as racialadmixture, the predominance of certain strong racialcharacteristics such as are observable on the borderlandsof Wales and Scotland,or it may derive from conditionsmoulded by climate, variations in soil, variations innatural surroundings or the quickened pressure of socialconditions such as tend to sharpen and quicken thevoice tone of the town dweller. These are the mouldinginfluences which produce what we know as dialect tem-perament,the distinctive temperament that lies at theback of all dialect. All these are possible sources ofderivation, and it is probable that the results which wecall dialect tone is due to a combination in varying pro-portions of some or all of the influences I have mentioned. \nTHE ESSEX DIALECT. \nWell,at this point I am going to leave it and turnto the Essex dialect which interests us all here, and Iam going to make use of it as an example of a dialectstudy, the study of a dialect which reveals some quitedistinctive and easily recognised features and possesses acertain well defined quality of temperament and tonesound which makes it at once one of the most delightfuland well repaying of all dialects. Why it should standso low in the category of well known and accepted dialectshas always been a puzzl","cbCaithvsm1U2yWa","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaithvsm1U2yWa","pdf",1578130,66,"English","# The Old-Time Essex Speech and Humour\n# Essex Dialect and Humour\n## Definition and study of dialect\n##
