certain wistfulness about the workL of Edward Thomas which differentiates it fromthat of most writers who have essayed to reveal thebeauty and significance of Nature. His choice of sub-jects indicates this sufficiently:a solitary child gatheringa posy, the death of a favourite dog, falling rain, thepathos surrounding a deserted house—these are amongthe pictures which Thomas gives us with a descriptivepower that is strong by reason of its reserve and quiet-ness.He excelled in all the finer shades. No one couldgive more sure expression to the peculiar mingling ofsmiles and tears that makes up an April day. \nSo when,in I917,we heard the news that he hadfallen in action we knew that we had lost a skilful inter-preter of Nature in her most intimate moods.Wehardly realized at that time that we had lost also a poetIt is true that his writing had been the very stuff ofpoetry, but the poems which came to us almost withthe news of his death showed that he was able to firea cool and patient observation with fine feeling andcrystallize the ecstasy of an exalted moment in verse. As for the man himself,it is sufficient to record thatW.H.Hudson spoke of him as\"my friend and one ofthe most lovable beings I have ever known.\"EdwardThomas was born in 1878,and received his educationat St Paul's School and Oxford. \nThanks are due to Mrs Thomas and to MessrsGerald Duckworth and
