Its content is grounded in skills identified as important byindependent schoolteachersand aligned with national learning standards. \nK-12 schools receive a range of materials from families applying for admission, and ISEE scores are often the one truly objective data point among thesematerials. Research has demonstrated that ISEE tests predict student success ina wide variety of independent schools.1 \n# Achievement and Reasoning Scores\n\nThe ISEE Lower, Middle, and Upper Levels contain four subtests representingtwo categories of skills: achievement and reasoning. The achievement subtests(Mathematics Achievement and Reading Comprehension) provide informationabout what a student knows and can do at the time of testing, while the reasoningsubtests (Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning) provide informationabout a student’s ability to learn. The test also includes an essay prompt to allowstudents to demonstrate their writing skills. The essay section is unscored. \nThe ISEE Primary tests for Grades 2-4 assess achievement in two sections: \nReading Comprehension and Math Achievement. \n1 Educational Records Bureau (2017) . The Independent SchoolEntrance Exam (ISEE) Validation Study. New York, NY: ERB. \n2 \nEquitable Use ofISEE Scores \n# Scoring\n\nISEE scores are based on the number of correct answers, adjusted to accountfor minor differences in difficulty across different ISEE test forms. No points arededucted for incorrect answers because a penalty for guessing is stressful forstudents and can reward “testing strategies” rather than skills. \nTo provide a comprehensive picture of a student’s performance, ISEE scores arereported with both percentile ranksand as stanines. \nThe percentile rank shows where a student’s performance falls within thenorm group, or the group of students entering the same grade who took theISEE during the past several years. Typically, students applying to independentschools are academically competitive. A student’s percentile rank score on ISEEtests may be less than what it has been on other tests where the comparisongroup is less competitive. \nBecause small differences in percentile ranks may not be meaningful, ISEE scoresare also reported as stanines. Stanines are determined by dividing the entirerange of the norm group’s scores into nine segments, as shown below. \nGraphical representation of the normsthat accompany ISEE scores \n3 \n# Equitable Use ofISEE Scores\n\nUsing Scores in the Admission Process \nAn ISEE test score should not be used as the sole determinant of an \nadmission decision. Admission officials should consider ISEE scores alongwith multiple sources of information, including students’coursework and grades, letters of recommendation from teachers, personal statements, interviews, andobservations during school visits. These are important sources of insight into anapplicant’s fit for a school. \n1 \n2 \nISEE scores should be considered within the overall context of thestudent’s application. How strong is the student’s current school? \nWhat opportunities for learning has the student had outside of their schoolcommunity? Does the student have adults who support them in their educationaljourney? Questions such as these can bring important information to theforefront of an admission decision. \n3 \nBecause ISEE norm groups are generally made up of competitive students,it is important that admission teams understand the overall range of ISEE \nscores. In addition, admission professionalsand committee members should befamiliar with the skills measured by the ISEE test. This allows admission officialsto weigh section scores as they consider a student’s fit with their school’scurriculum. \n4 \nThe ISEE is designed to showc","cbCaij00356x1LQv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaij00356x1LQv","pdf",1172313,"English","# Objective and Predictive Values\n# Achievement and Reasoning Scores\n# Scoring\n# Using Scores in the Admission Process\n# NextGen Admission","[{\"question\":\"What skills does the ISEE measure and how are they organized?\",\"answer\":\"The ISEE measures reasoning skills and academic achievement.
