Most of the time magical equipment can’t be bought and no magical pieces of equipment get outclassed. For that reason, merchants have little to offer to player besides vanity items.
This is a mid to late game system intended to give players something to do with the hoards of gold and gems that they have laying around from all that adventuring.
So, how does this work?

| At the end of this complement, you’ll ϐind lists with all available upgrades. You simply take an item (including magical items) to an NPC capable of such a task and a couple of days later you’ve got yourself some upgraded piece of equipment.
Can anyone upgrade my items? |
| --- |
| The only people that can perform this upgrades are Master Crafters. Blacksmiths that have spent their whole life dedicated to the craft and have gone above and beyond the mere capabilities of a regular craftsman. There are few of them, most live in large cities serving kings or powerful masters, others seclude themselves to hone their skills without the complications of society. Chances are that you won’t ϐind more than one or two of these people in your travels, but when gold is plenty their easier to locate. Just follow the rumors.
How much does it usually cost? |
| When upgrading a shield, armor or weapon for the ϐirst time there is a base cost of 500 GP (gold pieces), then each additional upgrade done to the item costs twice the cost of the last. They are made one at a time and the cost scales no matter if the upgrade is an iteration of a previous upgrade or a completely new one.
For example, if Oskar were to upgrade is heavy armor to get a +1 against slashing weapons it would cost 500 GP. Then if later on, he upgrades it so that he has an easier time against ϐire, it would cost 1000 GP. Leaving the next upgrade to cost 2000 GP. However, if Oskar decided to upgrade his shield instead, his ϐirst augmentation would only cost 500 GP.
This means that in order to get all available upgrades for a heavy armor you would need over 500 million gold pieces.
How is this balanced? |

This system mostly relies on two things for balance: Speciϐicity when it comes to upgrades and Availability when it comes to the NPCs capable of upgrading the items and the gold required to pay them.
You will notice that while most items are upgradable, these
changes are made with some kind of limiting factor. For example, when upgrading armor you’ll be able to make it better against one speciϐic type of weapon or element at ϐirst. But the further you go, the more well rounded the piece of equipment becomes. Your +3 against slashing weapons heavy armor is no good against a mace. Well, no better than a regular heavy armor, which is most likely good enough.
Then there is the price scaling. This system is exponential, meaning that the further you go, the harder it gets to upgrade the same item again. Players are not meant to get all available upgrades, but there is a ϐinite amount of upgrades, so it’s certainly possible. This portion of the system is designed to drain all the excess gold from your game, but if you ever feel like the fee is too much I strongly advised you to just freeze the price at that point.
The NPCs, on the other hand, are a tool for the Dungeon Master to regulate how often the upgrades are given to the players. You can use him as you would any other NPC: giving quests, getting mad, kidnapped or even dying. You hold all the cards here. You don’t even have to charge for the ϐirst few upgrades if you want to give it as a reward, but I highly recommend that you keep the price going up at least while gold lasts.
Upgrading Armor
There are three different upgrade categories for armor: Physical protection, Elemental protection and Utility adjustments.
Physical protecƟon
Armor can be upgraded to give additio","cbCaijFeeqalf39w","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijFeeqalf39w","pdf",328328,"English","# About this system
# Master Crafters and accessibility
# Upgrade costs and balance
# Upgrading Armor
## Physical protection
## Elemental protection
## Utility adjustments
# Upgrading Weapons
## Damage augmentation
## Versatility modifications","[{"question":"What is the purpose of the equipment upgrade system?","answer":"It gives players a way to spend accumulated gold and gems on stronger gear, especially when magical items are otherwise hard to buy or improve."},{"question":"Who can upgrade items and how do players use the system?","answer":"Only Master Crafters can perform upgrades.
