Why Peanuts?  \nI am a lifelong fan of Peanuts , not only because of its terrific characters, great good humor, and sharp insights into modern life and culture, but also because of its wonderful language. Nothing in fact could be simpler, more natural, more effective—more beautiful. Let’s face it: Peanuts is an icon. Its enduring influence on our life and times is undeniable. A classic example is Linus’s “security blanket,” an ingenious phrase and concept that soon found its way into every standard English dictionary and quickly became a metaphor for a universal human longing.  \nPeanuts abounds with such vital contributions to our language and culture. So I thought: Shouldn’t everyone have the opportunity to read and appreciate at least a few of these immortal comic strips? And then I thought: Why not find a way to use Peanuts to help students gain a good, solid grasp of practical, everyday English and, at the same time, encourage them to explore a wide variety of cultural as well as moral and philosophical issues? This textbook is the result.  \n2. How It Works  \nEach lesson is divided into two parts, each of which is introduced by a Peanuts strip. The first half of the lesson uses words and expressions found in the first strip to focus in on practical language instruction—vocabulary acquisition, proper usage, listening comprehension, basic composition, and so on. The second half deals with the weightier themes hinted at in the second strip: personal and group identity, disappointment and hope, gender stereotypes, social order and nonconformity, to name just a few.  \n3. Who It’s For  \nAlthough I wrote this textbook with college students in mind, I am confident that anyone looking for a fresh, fun approach to practical English learning will find it useful and stimulating. There is much to enjoy here—first and foremost, of course, the Peanuts strips themselves. I invite even those with certain attitudes towards English learning—perhaps crabs like Lucy or timid souls like Charlie Brown—to give this textbook a try.
