No English-Panjabidictionary at present exists.I did not, however, seem desir-able to compile an exhaustive dictionary;that would havebeen both bulky and expensive. What appeared to be requiredwas a volume, which, while containing s large selection ofwords likely to be useful, would be small enough to be easilyhandled, and cheap enough to be within the reach of all.Theprice has been increased by the wsr,but it has been kept aslow as possible, and no attempt has been made to do more thancover expenses. \nThe number of English words translated is about 5800,anumber sufficiently large for most purposes. The idea of thiswork was suggested by Col.D.C.Phillott's excellent“English-Hindustani Vocabulary.\" \nPanjabi may be divided into two main dialects, the northernor western, and southern or eastern. The former is spokenwest and north of Amritsar and is used throughout in thisVocabulary. It is commonly called northern Parjabi to dis-tinguish it from the southern dialect. \nSpecial Features:—(i)As most of those who use this bookwill possess the\"Panjabi Manual and Grammar\"written someyears ago by Dr.T.F.Cummings and myself,I have madefrequent references to it.In this way it has been possible torefer the student to fullel explanations of words and phrases. \n(ii)Nouns:The gender of every noun is given. It is indi-cated in most cases by m.or f.,but when the infinitive or thesign of the genitive(dā)is given along with a noun the letters \nm.and f.are omitted. The endings of the infn.-a、-,e,iãor the variations of the genitive sign dā,di,de,diǎshow thegender. When both m.and f.are used the word may beeither masc.or fem.,the commoner gender being given first. The addition of“pl.”means that the word is nearly alwaysplural. \nIn Appendix I several pages have been added containingnotes on the grammatical portion of the“Panjabi Manual” \niv \nincluding a complete conjugation of the verb with pronominalsuffixes. \n(ii)Verbs:Both trans.and intr.forms are frequently giventhe latter often correspond to the English passive. Occa-sionally the causal is added.Irregnlar past participles aregenerally mentioned. With one or two exceptions intensivecompound verbs(such as mukā chaddna, wekh laina)have notbeen used in the Vocabulary. There are not more than one ortwo verbs of which it can be asserted that the compound formis always necessary.Anocher reason is that.in most casesseveral different compound forms are possible;and finallyEuropeans when they learn a co","cbCainOJD6LeJZLT","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainOJD6LeJZLT","pdf",10750950,188,"English","# Preface\n# Introduction\n## Purpose and audience\n## Dialects and vocabulary scope\n## Special features\n## Appendix I and II notes","[{\"question\":\"Who is the dictionary primarily compiled for?\",\"answer\":\"It is issued primarily to meet the needs of Europeans who use Punjabi in their dealings, and secondarily to help Punjabi readers and schoolboys find meanings of common English words they encounter.\"},{\"question\":\"How many English words and phrases are translated?\",\"answer\":\"The dictionary translates about 7,500 English words and phrases into Punjabi in Roman script, with roughly 5,800 English words for most purposes.\"},{\"question\":\"What special features are highlighted for learners?\",\"answer\":\"It provides noun gender information, details about verb transitive/intransitive forms and constructions, includes many idioms, uses cross-references to save space, and distinguishes Hindu and Muhammadan word usage.\"}]","ENGLISH - PUNJABI DICTIONARY - (in Roman Script) - T.
