Jane Austen was one of the major English novelists. She was born on 16 December, 1775 and died on July 18, 1817. In those days, there were no women writers but Jane Austen began to write domestic type of novels. She was born and brought up in a middle class family and she \nhad first-hand experience of middle class people, their lifestyle, customs etc. \nJane Austen's major works are as following: \n1. Sense and sensibility (1811) \n2. Pride and Prejudice (1813) \n3. Mansfield Park (1814) \n4. Emma (1815) \n5. Northanger Abbey (1817) \n6. Persuasion (1817) \nJane Austen's novels are called domestic novels as she had limited experience of middle class society and domestic life. She wrote about love, romance, marriage, pride and prejudice in men and women. Her works depict fidelity to experience. Her writing style is a mixture of neoclassicism and romanticism. \nJane Austen's style was simple and down to earth. There is humour and irony in her works. There is also realistic picture of middle class life. She portrayed her characters very realistically and she dealt with the themes of love, marriage, wealth, ego, pride, and prejudice. She depicted her character with passion and rational attitude. She stressed on sense rather than sensibility. \nJane Austen wrote her novels with dramatic element. She pioneered the comedy of manners in her novels. She also wrote her novels with feminist point of view. She is one with the earliest women writers who presented feministic perspectives in her novels. \nLet us discuss some of the important aspects of Jane Austen as a novelist: \n(1) Narrow range: \nThe themes of Jane Austen's novels are limited. She presented middle class life and society in country side of England. She drew all her materials from the society around her. She dealt with her own knowledge \nand experience rather than imagined world. She chose her themes from the range of her own experience. She avoided unnecessary passion and language of emotional. She always remained faithful to her own experiences of life. Therefore she dealt with themes of marriage, engagement, love and choice of husbands for girls. Middle class people also sought husbands with good income and wealth. \n(2) Humour and satire: \nJane Austen's novels can be termed as domestic comedies. She dealt with middle class people and their strange behaviour, prejudice, etc. Her comedy is confined to human characters with their personal relations. Her attitude towards life was light-hearted and humorous. Her humour is gentle and free from malice. She is never harsh or unkind. \n(3) Major theme of love and marriage: \nIn most of the novels of Jane Austen, major themes are love and marriage. Marriage often depends on the family status and economic condition. In 'Pride and Prejudice' Mrs. Bennet tells her husband that Mr. Bingley was a handsome man with large fortune. For her, money was more important than handsomeness and nature. For middle class people, wealth was the main criterion for suitable match.
