Sonnet 144 by William Shakespeare \nWilliam Shakespeare (1564-1616), an immortal figure in the world of letters - poet and playwright-was born in Stratford-on-Avon in Warwickshire, England. Some of his most popular plays are Hamlet, As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar and King Lear. He is equally well-known for the sonnets he wrote. He developed a new style of sonnet writing which was later named after him. The usual rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet is end-rhymed a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g. A series of 154 sonnets by Shakespeare were published together in 1609. These sonnets refer to three figures-a blond young aristocrat, a dark lady and a rival poet. This trio provides an ironic and dramatic dimension to the otherwise unidimensional traditional relation of lover-poet and ladymuse યણા. The sonnets are remarkable for their compact વઘન language, point of view and intense moral vision. \nThe present poem is about two lovers, a male and a female. They attempt to get an objective view by distancing himself. But the uncertainty of the relationship tortures him when he attempts to mock it. There are two popular interpretations of this poem; one critic seems to believe that the woman has a disease and that he is afraid that he will get it and \nanother critic thinks that the man will grow tired of the woman. Either way, the lover is uncertain of the outcome. \nTwo loves I have of comfort and despair, Which like two spirits do suggest me still; The better angelis a man right fair, The worser spirit a woman colour'dill. \nTo win me soon to hell, my female evil Tempteth my better angelfrom my side, And would corrupt my saint to be a devil, Wooing his purity with herfoulpride. \nAnd whether that my angel be turn'dfiend Suspect I may, but not directly tell; But being both from me, both to each friend, I guess one angel in another's hell: \nYet this shall I ne'er know, but live in doubt, Till my bad angelfire my good one out. \nGlossary: \ndespair-complete loss or absence of hope the better angel-the man, who is an angel \nthe worser spirit-the woman, who is a demon from hell colour'd ill -of dark complexion, black \ncorrupt-having or showing a willingness to act dishonestly \npurity-freedom from adulteration or contamination ઴ણથી \nfire my good one out-drive away the good one fiend-evil, devil \nwoo-try to win, try to attract \ntempteth-","cbCaiac4EbGUxMJ5","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiac4EbGUxMJ5","pdf",2215082,119,"English","# Course Content: Lyric Form\n## Prescribed Poems for Exam\n## Unit 1: Origin and Development of the genre\n## Unit 2: Lyric Types: Sonnet, Elegy, Ode, Ballad\n## Unit 3: Characteristics of Lyric\n## Unit 4: Poetic Symphony: An Anthology of Sonnets, Elegies, Odes and Ballads\n# Semester end examination (70 Marks)\n## Long Answer Questions (Forms)\n## Long Answer Questions (Poems)\n## Short Notes Questions (Forms)\n## Short Notes Questions (Poems)\n# Study Notes: Sonnet 144\n## Poem Summary and Themes\n## Poem Text (Two Loves I Have of Comfort and Despair)\n## Glossary","[{\"question\":\"Which poems are included as prescribed works for the exam?\",\"answer\":\"The document lists ten prescribed poems, including Sonnet 144 (William Shakespeare), Holy Sonnet 14 (John Donne), The Soldier (Rupert Brooke), Daddy (Sylvia Plath), Do Not Go Gentle into That Night (Dylan Thomas), Ode to a Nightingale (John Keats), Dejection: An Ode (S.T.
