Song by John Donne \nJohn Donne (1572-1631) was the greatest of the writers of 'metaphysical' poetry in which passion is interwoven with reasoning. After 1660 this kind of poetry was derided અળ઱ના . Dr. Johnson's condemnation of it in his 'Life of Cowley' is well known. But T.S. Eliot and other modern critics have revalued the metaphysical poets and Donne is now ranked with the best English poets. Until his marriage in 1601 Donne was 'a great visitor of ladies', a man of fashion, an adventurer. Most of his love poems, sometimes cynical, sometimes sincere, belong to this period. His religious poems, such as the 'Holy Sonnets', were written after his ordination સ્થા પ઩તપનયમ as a priest. As Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral during the last ten years \nof his life he preached sermons ranking among the best of the 17th century. \nIn this song Donne bids his friend do some impossible things. But however far and however long he travels, and however many wonders he finds, he will never find a woman who is both faithful and beautiful. Even if he finds one she would certainly be false before the poet could visit her. \n================================================================================ \nGo and catch a falling star, Get with child a mandrake root, Tell me where all past years are, Or who cleft the Devil's foot, Teach me to hear mermaids singing, Or to keep off envy's stinging. \nAnd find What wind \nServes to advance an honest mind. \nIf thou beest born to strange sighs, Things invisible go see, \nRide ten thousand days and nights, Till age snow white hairs on thee, Thou, when thou return'st, wilt tell me All strange wonders that befell thee, And swear \nNowhere \nLives a woman true, and fair. \nIf thou find'st one, let me know, Such a pilgrimage were sweet; Yet do n","cbCaileAica4OazD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaileAica4OazD","pdf",1835508,113,"English","# Course content\n## Selected poems and page references\n## Poetic devices and figures of speech\n## Semester end examination\n## Long answer questions\n## Short notes questions\n## Recommended reading\n# Critical appreciation and notes\n## Song by John Donne","[{\"question\":\"Which poems are included in the prescribed content and where are they referenced in the textbook?\",\"answer\":\"The paper lists Song (John Donne), The Indifferent, The Bait, From Holy Sonnets-1, A Hymn to God the Father, Virtue, The Collar, The Pulley, To His Coy Mistress, and The Garden, with page ranges shown after each poem.\"},{\"question\":\"What poetic devices and figures of speech are emphasized for the exam?\",\"answer\":\"The emphasized figures of speech are alliteration, simile, metaphor, personification, paradox, conceit, apostrophe, synecdoche, hyperbole, and metonymy.\"},{\"question\":\"What types of questions appear in the semester-end examination?\",\"answer\":\"The exam includes long answer questions on poems and poetic devices/figures, plus short notes questions on poems and poetic devices/figures.\"}]","English 4 - Selected Poems and Examination Questions | PDF",1789940601,285]
