Either way, an engineering design process will have been followed, in one form or another. The Design as a generic tool module provides an interesting a comprehensive introduction to engineering and design, so a detailed discussion of the design process will not be inclided here. \nIn essence, designs progress from : \nsome statement of need \nto.. \nidentification or specification of problem \nto.. \nsearch for solutions \nand finally to... \ndevelopment of solution to manufacture, test and use. \nThis sequence is usually iterative. It repeats until a satisfactory solution has evolved, as indicated in the flow diagram below. \nEngineering drawing and design 2 \n1.2 The design model. \nThe concept of the designer working with a model of a design is fundamental to the design process. \nThe design model is a representation of the design. This model could be anything from a few ideas in the designers head, through to rough sketches and notes, calculations, sets of detailed formal engineering drawings, computer generated 3D representations, physical prototypes, etc. \nThe design model would be used by the designer to record and develop ideas and to provide a basis to evaluate the design. \nLarger design projects are undertaken by more than one engineer. Design models are used to communicate and demonstrate ideas between all those concerned with the product design, development, manufacture and use. \nA designer needs to have the skills to generate and work with this model in order to communicate ideas and develop a design. \n1.3 Types of design model. \nDesigners use a variety of different models, depending on what property of the design is to be considered and for whom the information is destined. \nTypically a designer may model: \n􀀁 Function \n􀀁 Structure \n􀀁 Form \n􀀁 Material properties, surface conditions \nAll of these areas probably encompass a large portion of the degree syllabus. Within this modulke we will concern ourselves primarily with form, i.e. the shape of parts or components and how they fit together. \nEngineering drawing & design 3 \n2.1 Projections. \n2.1.1 Orthographic projection. \nWe have discussed both the role of the design model in the design process and the importance of the representation of the form or shape in this role. \nNow we will consider in detail the methods designers use to represent the form of their designs. \nBack in the 18th century a French mathematician and engineer, Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), was involved with the design of military armory. He developed a system, using two planes of projection at right angles to each other, for graphical description of solid objects. \nThis system, which was, and still is, called Descriptive Geometry, provided a method of graphically describing objects accurately and unambiguously. It relied on the perpendicular projection of geometry from perpendicular planes. \nMonge's Descriptive Geometry forms the basis of what is now called Orthographic Projection. \n􀀁 The word orthographic \nFigure 2.1a, two right angle planes of projection. mederainsvedtofrramwthaet rGigrehetkangleswords:and is \nORTHOS - straight, rectangular, upright \nGRAPHOS - written, drawn \nOrthographic projection ","cbCaigXAma2TvvQV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigXAma2TvvQV","pdf",1980154,46,"English","# The design process and the role of the design model\n## The design process\n## The design model\n## Types of design model\n# Representing the design model - Engineering Drawing\n## Projections\n## Creating orthographic projection drawings\n## Drawing conventions\n## Sections\n## Dimensions\n## Tolerances, limits and fits\n## Assemblies\n# Projections (continued)\n## Orthographic projection\n## First angle projection","[{\"question\":\"What stages make up the engineering design process described in the notes?\",\"answer\":\"The process moves from a statement of need to identifying or specifying the problem, searching for solutions, and finally developing the solution for manufacture, testing, and use.
