discontinuouschange and to be proactive in tranaforming, not onlyhealth care, but alao our organizational life!We needto see the gradual processes that often pose thegreatest threats. We may need new rules for new ballgames and we will have to discover them for ourselves. This much about the future is predictable:thefuture does not belong to those who are content withtoday because future is synonymous with change.Ifwe proceed thoughtfully and in unity we will shapethe future that represents a composite of our dreamsfor nursing, for CNA and for health eare. \nThe Four Quarters. The poem continues: \nThe end of my first year as CNA President is such abeginning.Between this beginning and this end camesome rewarding, challenging, visionary, pioneering, exhilarating and thought provoking times. My mostrewarding times have been those I have spend withyou,CNA members, colleagues and friends.ThroughyouI have grown and my convictions about nursinghave become strengthened. \nGeorge Bernard Shaw onee observed that allprogress depends on the unreasonable man.Hisargument wm that the reasonable mn adapts him-self to the world, while the unreasonable man per-sists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, for any change o consequence we mustlook to the unreasonable man or to the unreasonablewoman. \nDuring this House of Delegates, you will be presented with decisions involving nuraing practice, healthcare, organizational fiscal issues and our StrategicPlanCNA's programs and policies are diverse inorder to be responsive to our social obligations.Wewill be able to carry off thinkingthe unlikely and doing the unreasonable.Change, after allis only another word for growth, anotherword for learning. \nOne year ago, this House of Delegates approved aStrategie Plan for CNA.Its major goals are:toenhance the organizational strength of CNA;tostrengthen CNA's role in promoting and preservingthe nursing profession;and to maintain andstrengthen CNA's advocacy role. The Board, cabinets, councils, and committees have accomplished a greatdeal related to each of these three goals.I congratu-late them mn their effort and accomplishments, sinceit is no secret that the major
