The introduction explains how encounters transform people, contrasting followers who were amazed with those who were offended or hostile. It highlights the Emmaus road story in Luke 24, emphasizing Scripture-based teaching, the opening of eyes during the breaking of bread, and renewed hope and desire to draw closer to the specifically,Merriam-Webstersays,to encounter is \"to come upon or experience es-pecially unexpectedly.” \nWhether it was Paul on the road to Damascus, theSamaritan woman at the well,or the demon-possessedman on the shores of Galilee, those who encounteredJesus were changed in unexpected ways. \nAs we read through the four gospel accounts, therewere certainly many who followed Jesus from a dis-tance.Some were amazed by his miracles while otherswere offended by his teachings. What we find verylittle of is neutrality or indifference.People eitherloved or hated this carpenter's son who hailed fromNazareth. \nIn Luke 24,we see an interesting encounter betweenthe resurrected Jesus and two of his followers as theywere walking from Jerusalem to the town of Emmaus.Luke tells us that\"Jesus himself suddenly came andbegan walking with them”(Luke 24:15). \n2·CJ HITZ \nAnd then in verse 16 we read,\"But God kept themfrom recognizing him.” \nFor the next several miles, the Son of God in disguiseproceeds to give the troubled travelers a Bible lessonreminding them ofall that the Scriptures had predictedconcerning the Messiah. \nWhatever Jesus shared with them on the journey wasenough to whet the appetites of this pair. They wantedto hear more from their new mystery friend,so theyinvited him to crash at their place for the night. \nSitting at the dinner table,Jesus took some bread andblessed it before breaking it and giving it to the oblivi-ous hosts. And then it happened: \n\"Suddenly,their eyes were opened, and they recog-nized him.And at that moment he disappeared!”(Luke 24:31). \nPoof!Gone in sixty-hundredths of a second.I canalmost visualize Jesus, twinkle in his eye, flashinga knowing
