It emphasizes that her verses were composed primarily for personal expression rather than public release, and discusses how confinement, reclusiveness, and a selective circle of friends shaped her output. It also outlines her rigorous personal standards, her meticulous revision practice, and key biographical details including birth, death, family background, and Amherst the Portfolio,\"—something produced abso-lutely without the thought of publication, and solelyby way of expression of the writer's own mind.Suchverse must inevitably forfeit whatever advantage liesin the discipline of public criticism and the enforcedconformity to accepted ways.On the other hand, itmay often gain something through the habit of free-dom and the unconventional utterance of daringthoughts. In the case of the present author, therewas absolutely no choice in the matter;she mustwrite thus,or not at all.A recluse by temperamentand habit, literally spending years without settingher foot beyond the doorstep, and many more years \nduring which her walks were strictly limited to herfather's grounds, she habitually concealed her mind, like her person, from all but a very few friends;andit was with great difficulty that she was persuaded toprint, during her lifetime, three or four poems.Yetshe wrote verses in great abundance;and thoughcuriously indifferent to all conventional rules, had yeta rigorous literary standard of her own,and oftenaltered a word many times to suit an ear which hadits own tenacious fastidiousness. \nMiss Dickinson was born in Amherst,Mass.,Dec.Io,1830,and died there May I5,1886.Herfather,Hon.Edward Dickinson, was the leadinglawyer of Amherst, and was treasurer of the well-knowncollege there situated. It was his custom once a yearto hold a large reception at his house, attended by allthe families connected with the institution and by theleading people of the town.On these occasions hisdaughter Emily emerged from her wonted retirementand did her part as gracious hostess;nor would anyone have known from her manner,I have been told, that this was not a daily occurrence. The
