This exercise has been designed to allow you to demonstrate your ability to: \n1. Elicit a focused history from a standardized patient who presents with chronic back pain and a second standardized patient who presents with chest pain and shortness of breath \n2. Determine if opiate overuse is present \n3. Discuss the potential risks of opiate overuse if appropriate \n4. Provide alternatives to opiates in multimodal pain management \n5. Interpret test results and communicate findings to standardized patient \n6. Engage in a shared decision-making process with standardized patient \n7. Demonstrate understanding of clinical decision-making tools \n8. Communicate effectively with the standardized patient in both the encounter and the feedback session \nThere is NO physical exam required in this OSCE. Physical exam findings will be provided to you when applicable. \nPRE-WORK \nIt is highly recommended that you review the following resources to insure your success in this OSCE: \nGeneral Shared Decision Making \n● Shared Decision Making Blog Post: \n[h](https://www.aliem.com/beyond-abstract-shared-decision-making-3-factors/)[ttps://www.aliem.com/beyond-abstract-shared-decision-making-3-factors/](https://www.aliem.com/beyond-abstract-shared-decision-making-3-factors/) \n● Shared Decision Making Annals of EM article (see attached) \n● Shared Decision Making Hand out (see attached) \nCardiac Shared Decision Making \n● HEART score: \n[h](https://www.saem.org/cdem/education/online-education/m4-curriculum/group-m4)[ttps://www.saem.org/cdem/education/online-education/m4-curriculum/group-m4](https://www.saem.org/cdem/education/online-education/m4-curriculum/group-m4) \n[-approach-to/shortness-of-breath/acute-coronary-syndromes](-approach-to/shortness-of-breath/acute-coronary-syndromes) \nPain Management Shared Decision Making \n• Lower Back Pain Emergencies: [http://www.emdocs.net/em-cases-lower-back-pain](http://www.emdocs.net/em-cases-lower-back-pain)emergencies/ \n• Non Opioid Pain Management: [https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/training/nonopioid/508c/](https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/training/nonopioid/508c/) \n• Prescription Database Monitoring Programs and how to use them \n[https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/training/pdmp/index.html](https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/training/pdmp/index.html) \n• UptoDate Article on Non-pharmacological pain management for back pain: Subacute and \nchronic low back pain: Nonpharmacologic and pharmacologictreatment (see attached) \nAt your Scheduled OSCE Time: \n1. You will have 15 minutes for this encounter and will receive a warning via an overhead announcement when there are 5 minutes remaining. You will receive a second announcement once the 15 minutes has passed and the encounter is over. \n6. The standardized patient will provide feedback based on your communication and interpersonal skills in Encounter 1 \n7. Go to assigned room and review the chart for Encounter 2 (1-2 minutes) \n8. Participate in Encounter 2. You will have 15 minutes for this encounter and will receive a warning via an overhead announcement when there are 5 minutes remaining. You will receive a second announcement once the 15 minutes has passed and the encounter is over. \n9. Receive feedback based on your communication and interpersonal skills in Encounter 2 \n10.
