well-established—is historic-ally interesting rather than intrinsically valuable. In as far as the work requires an approach morespecifically literary than is demanded by the earlieremblem-books Hall's methods as an emblem-writercan be described as akin to those of Quarles,Harvey, and Arwaker(v.Rosemary Freeman,English EmblemBooks,I948,p.II4).Also,as with theirs, certainsubst antial parts of his work are derivative. But Hall'sverse has little merit and his borrowings are ill-assimilated.The verse of the Præludium and ofemblems Nos.I and 2 of Book I and Nos.4-8 ofBook Ⅱ had all previously been published in Hall'sown Poems,I646-7(pp.9I-4,IO2-4,97-9,75-6,52-4,89-90,82-4,76-8 respectively).Furthermore theplates to emblems Nos.I-I9 in Book I have beencopied from an Augustinian emblem-book,MichaelHoyer's Flammule Amoris S.P.Augustini Versibus etIconibus Exornatæ,I629(cf.Mario Praz,Studies inSeventeenth-Century Imagery,I964,Pp.375-6).Although Hall uses these plates in the same order asHoyer they do not represent a complete series, butare the plates to Hoyer's emblems Nos.I-XII,XIV-XVIII,XX,XXII and XXIII.The apparentreason for the omission by Hall of Hoyer's platesNos.I,XII,XIX,XXI,XXIV and XXV is that ineach of them St.Augustine is represented.Presum-ably so clearly recognizable a person as the centralfigure in each of these six plates made them unsuit-able for Hall's purpose. The engraved title-page ofEmblems with Elegant Figures is similarly derived fromthe engraved title of Hoyer's book (although itomits a coat of arms and a seated episcopal figurefrom the oval tablets at the head). The remainingplates to Hall's emblems seem to have been cutespecially to accompany his verses. But these platesare crudely executed and rudimentary in design and \nfor the most part they contribute little more to theemblem than simple illustration of some aspects ofthe verse.Unfortunately,Hall“moralizes”Hoyer'smore sophisticated plates so ineffectually, and achievessuch small correspondence between verse and plate, that the standard of those emblems is scarcely higherthan the remainder.Indeed,as the phrase“withElegant Figures\"in Hall's title suggests, the platesseem to have been regarded simply as embellish-ments of his verses, and the classical precept foremblem-writers that picture and verse should be“so strictly united together, that being consideredapart, they cannot explicate themselves distinctly theone without the other”receives scant recognition. \nEmblems with Elegant Figures,I6s8,has the collationI20*4 A-DI2[±D6.7]EI2[-EI2].This,the Stirling-Maxwell copy, like the copies in the British Museum(I2305.a.I7.)and at Harvard(Typ.6os.s8447),retains the cancellanda at D6.7.From the head-titles(A3r and D8r),the running-headline,and thecancellandum letterpress title-page (D7r),it appearsthat the work was originally called Sparkles ofDivine Love and that Roger Daniel printed it atCambridge in I648,the year after Hall had left theUniversity. There is no evidence to show that it waspublished at that time.Ten years later, and after Hall'sdeath,Daniel, now working in London, printed acancel title-leaf to the second part, together with itsconjugate leaf (D6),and apparently added new pre-liminaries for an issue of the original sheets.Wing'sentries H344 and H344A are mistaken in represent-ing two different editions of Emblems with ElegantFigures, and merely reflect copies of the same editionin different states. \nHall's work is neither a
