Soon after he became king, the kingdom was divided. Jeroboam ruled the kingdom of Israel in the north and Rehoboam ruled the kingdom of Judah in the south.  \nMany years after the kingdom divided, a man named Ahab ruled as the king of Israel for twenty-two years. He reigned over Israel in Samaria. Ahab was more evil than any Israelite king who had ruled before him.  \nAhab married a woman named Jezebel from a foreign country and started to worship her gods. He built a temple for the false god Baal in Samaria. He also set up a wooden pole for the worship of the goddess Asherah.  \nThen a prophet named Elijah went to King Ahab and said,“In the name of the Lord, the God of Israel whom I serve, I tell you that there will beno dew or rain during the next few years until I  \n”  \nsay so.  \nGod told Elijah to go to the brook Cherith and he did. There, just as God had promised, ravens brought him food every morning and evening. But soon the brook dried up, because there was no rain.  \nSo God said to Elijah,“Go to the town of Zarephath, near Sidon, and stay there.
