E N E W SLET T E R OF THE SE CU L A R F A MILY N E T W O R K \nElder Wisdom \nGerald A.Larue,University of Southern California professor emeritus \nThis story concludes the account, begun in FM Fall 2002 andcontinued in Winter 2002/03.of Jordan's struggle with humanvalues and ethics.—EDS. \nJordan was excited. When the class-ending bell range he didn'teven wait for his friends. He got his bike and raced for home.Hisgrandfather would be there, and Jordan loved this elderly manwho always treated him like a real person—not like a kid.Hisgrandfather was returning from a protest march in Washington. There would be so much to talk about \nAt home,Jordan took the time to obey his parents'rules andput his bike in the garage, but then he ran into the house andthrew his arms around the white-haired man.\"Oh,Grandpa,Iamso happy to see you.\"The older man returned the hug and swungJordan off of his feet.\"Wow,are you ever growing! You are almosttoo heavy for me to liftyou. No more sitting on my lap while I readyou stories.Remember those days?\" \n\"I remember. But you still have stories to tell and I want tohear the latest—all about Washington.\" \n\"Well,let's wait a bit.Grandma and your mother are fixing asnack.Your sister will be here in a few minutes.Your dad phonedand he is on his way home.Let's let's wait till the gang is all here. But I will say this—it was quite an experience.\" \nFor over an hour,Jordan listened while his grandparents toldabout the war protest rally in Washington. Now Jordan and hisgrandfather were alone on the patio.\"You said that people haddifferent reasons for protesting—why did you and Grandma go?Are you against war with Saddam?\" \n\"I guess you might say that lam against war in general.I wantto be sure we have explored all the alternatives before we attack.I think of the 150,000 young men and women in our armed ser-vices already there and the talk about using atomic weapons toget at hidden bunkers.I shudder when I think of the deaths ofyoung Americans and Iraqi civilians.I just want to be sure thatwar is the only way to go.” \n\"But you were in the Army.Did you ever kill anyone?\" \n\"Yes I was in the Army, but,no,I never killed anyone.I was inthe medical corps, and it was my job to help the wounded, notcause more wounds.Believe me,what I saw makes me hopethat we can find another way to compel Saddam to tell the UnitedNations inspection teams what he has done with all the weaponshe stockpiled earlier.\" \n\"How come you were in the medica corps? You are not a doc-tor.\" \n\"Did I never tell you that story?Well,I was in my junior year inhigh school, and I turned sixteen just one month after PearlHarbor. You know about that?\" \n\"Yeah,December 7,1941—the day of infamy.\" \n\"Well,I was still too young for the Army when I graduated.Ihad been a student volunteer with the fire department—so lcon-tinued to do that, and then for seven months I worked in theemergency room at the hospital. Two days after I turned eighteenlenlisted, and when they learned about my medical training theyfigured I would be of more use in the medical corps. So that iswhere lended up—and l am glad it happened that way.\" \n\"So what you experienced during the war with Japan is whatgot you and Grandma to go to the protest march.\" \n\"Well,Grandma has her own reasons, and you can talk withher about that, but there is more to my concern for peace.I vis-ited Hiroshima in 1948—that was three years after we droppedthe atomic bomb. What I saw made me sick.I threw up.I actual-ly cried. The city was destroyed.People were trying to get theirlives back together.I saw some of the people—the kids—whowere nuked.I don't want that to happen to the Iraqi people, andI don't want any fallout to affect our soldiers. So that is why I wentto Washington—just to say that,if there is another way to solvethis problem without going to war, then,as we used to say,'Givepeace a chance'Does all of this make any sense to you?” \n\"Yeah.But not everyone who went to Washington had yourkind of experience.Grandma didn't.\" ","cbCaihGji3D2l4gF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihGji3D2l4gF","pdf",3049809,"English","#
