This exercise requires only a piece of paper and a pencil, encouraging participants to connect with nature and explore their artistic abilities. The challenge involves finding a natural object outdoors, such as a leaf or flower, and closely observing its shapes and details. Students are instructed to sketch the object on one half of their paper using their dominant hand, focusing on the overall form with minimal erasing and pencil lifting. Subsequently, they must recreate the same object on the other half of the paper using their non-dominant hand, this time aiming to capture all the details. The final step involves comparing the two drawings to identify differences, surprises, and surprising successes of the non-dominant hand. This self-reflection is intended to help students recognize their strengths. The Eastern Iowa Arts Academy offers free and low-cost after-school arts programs across various locations in Cedar Rapids.","Nature Drawing Challenge  \nFor Middle and  \nHigh School Students  \nPresented by the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy  \nThis week’s project is a bit of a challenge. You’ll only need a piece of  \npaper and a pencil for this one!  \nStep 1: Go outside and find a piece of nature. A leaf, a flower, anything that inspires you.  \nStep 2: Take a few moments to study your object. Place it on flat surface and notice what shapes make it up.  \nStep 3: On one half of your piece of paper, sketch the object with your dominant hand. Try not to erase anything. Don’t worry too much about the details. Try to lift your pencil as little as possible.  \nStep 4: Now, on the other half of your paper, sketch the object with your nondominant hand. Try to include all the details you put into your first sketch.  \nStep 5: Look at the differences between your two drawings. Are there things that surprised you about either of them? Did you do anything better with your non-dominant hand than you did with your dominant hand? Take note of these things!
