Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is also a risk factor for suicide and NSSI severity may contribute to development of capability for lethal self-injury. Further research is needed to understand how NSSI severity increases suicide risk, specifically in high-risk populations like sexual minorities. The current study seeks to examine whether sexual minority adults exhibit greater NSSI severity and suicide risk than heterosexuals, and if NSSI severity moderates the relationship between sexual orientation and suicide risk. \nMethods: Undergraduate students (N = 1,994) who reported five or more acts of NSSI in their lifetime completed online self-report questionnaires including sexual orientation, NSSI severity, and suicide risk. \nResults: A factorial ANOVA demonstrated main effects of sexual orientation and NSSI severity on suicide risk. \nDiscussion: The lack of significant interaction effect indicates NSSI severity does not amplify the effect of on sexual orientation on suicide risk; rather, it predicts the same level of increased risk across orientations. Therefore, suicidality related to both sexual orientation and NSSI severity are equally important treatment targets. \nIndividuals who identify as sexual minorities (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, etc.) are at particularly high risk for suicide (Fox et al., 2020; Oginni et al., 2019; Ross-Reed et al., 2019; Smith et al., 2020). Compared to the 13% of heterosexual individuals who contemplate suicide and the 10% of heterosexual individuals who make suicide plans, upwards of 47% of sexual minority persons report suicidal ideation and 38% made specific plans to end their life (Kann et al., 2018). Sexual minority adults attempt suicide at a rate nearly five times the general population (11–20% vs. 4%; Hottes et al., 2016). The U.S. Surgeon General’s call to action for suicide prevention highlights the sexual minority community’s increased risk for suicide and inadequate options for specialized treatment (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2021). \nA pattern has emerged within the sexual minority community such that suicide attempts peak during adolescence (ages 18–20, specifically) and in those aged 30–40 (Salway et al., 2021). Among sexual minority individuals who have died by suicide, the most commonly used methods are hanging, firearms, and overdose (Clark et al., 2020). Sexual minority individuals, particularly youth and young adults, likely do not have innately increased risk for suicide. Instead, research supports that social \nand contextual influences, such as exposure to conversion practices and religious-based discrimination and rejection, significantly contributes to suicidality among sexual minority youth (Jones et al., 2021). Discrimination against sexual minority individuals and suicide attempts are closely connected; this relationship is strongest in ages 18–25, and even stronger among individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (Layland et al., 2020). Further, risk of a suicide attempt was found to be 20% higher among sexual minority youth who reported unsupportive environments (Hatzenbuehler, 2011). Sexual minority youth who are subject to bullying and discrimination, particularly in school settings, are ","cbCaifOhRRJf4bVG","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifOhRRJf4bVG","pdf",528055,"English","# Abstract\n## Introduction\n## Methods\n## Results\n## Discussion\n# Background and Rationale\n## Prevalence and risk comparisons","[{\"question\":\"What is the main research question of the study?\",\"answer\":\"The study examines whether sexual minority adults show greater NSSI severity and suicide risk than heterosexuals, and whether NSSI severity moderates the link between sexual orientation and suicide risk.\"},{\"question\":\"What did the factorial ANOVA find?\",\"answer\":\"The analysis demonstrated main effects of both sexual orientation and NSSI severity on suicide risk.\"},{\"question\":\"How did NSSI severity affect suicide risk across orientations?\",\"answer\":\"The lack of a significant interaction indicates NSSI severity does not amplify the effect of sexual orientation on suicide risk; it predicts the same level of increased risk across orientations.\"}]","Effects of sexual orientation and NSSI severity on suicide risk | PDF",1790024735,15]
