\nMots-clés : littératie en santé mentale, stagiaires en formation à l’enseignement, éducation inclusive, autoefficacité \nCanadian Journal of Education / Revue canadienne de l’éducation 44:2 (2021) [www.cje-rce.ca](www.cje-rce.ca) \nIntroduction \nThere are many definitions of mental health and illness. For the purposes of clarity, within this study, we use the following definitions of mental health and mental illness from Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General (U.S. Public Health Service, 1999): \nMental Health is…the successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and to cope with adversity. Mental health is indispensable to personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships, and contribution to community or society…from early childhood until late life, mental health is the springboard of thinking and communication skills, learning, emotional growth, resilience and self-esteem. (p. 4) \nMental illness is the term that refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders. Mental disorders are health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood or behavior (or some combination thereof) associated with distress and/or impaired functioning. (p. 5) \nOne in five Canadians will experience mental illness at some point in their life (Mental Health Commission of Canada, 2013a) . Research has found that 70% of adults living with mental illness report development of symptoms before age 18 (Kessler et al., 2005) .
