Focused, modular training approaches may enhance learning by reducing cognitive overload, especially in resource-limited settings.
Methods
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a focused educational intervention on a single ACLS algorithm in improving knowledge, skills, and self-perceived confidence among healthcare workers, and to assess short-term retention at one week. It was a Quasi-experimental pre–post study. This study was conducted at a 200-bedded facility in Murree, Pakistan. This study was conducted among 30 healthcare workers, including nurses and paramedical staff. Participants underwent a one-day workshop focusing on shockable and non-shockable rhythm algorithms, incorporating interactive lectures, demonstration, and hands-on practice. Knowledge (12-item MCQ), skills (8-step simulation checklist), and confidence (5-item Likert scale) were assessed at baseline, immediately postintervention, and at one-week follow-up. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons.
Results
Significant improvements were observed across all three domains following the intervention. There was a statistically significant effect of time on knowledge (F = 43 . 5, p < 0 .001), skills (F = 274, p < 0 .001), and confidence (F = 54 . 6, p < 0 .001), with large effect sizes, particularly for skills (partial η² = 0 .904) . Post hoc analysis demonstrated significant improvement from pre-to post-intervention and from pre-intervention to one-week follow-up across all domains (p < 0 .001) . At one week, knowledge showed a small but statistically significant decline compared to immediate post-intervention (p = 0 .019), while changes in skills (p = 0 . 151) and confidence (p = 1 .000) were not statistically significant, indicating retention of these domains.
Conclusion
A focused, simulation-based ACLS training intervention targeting a single algorithm significantly improves knowledge, skills, and confidence among healthcare workers, with short-term retention of skills and confidence. However, early decline in knowledge highlights the need for periodic reinforcement.
Targeted modular training may represent an effective and practical approach for ACLS education, particularly in mixed-skill and resource-limited settings.
BACKGROUND
Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a major global health challenge, with an estimated incidence of 95.9 cases per 100,000 population annually [ 1] . Despite advances in resuscitation science, cardiac arrest continues to be one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, ranking as the third leading cause of death in the United States [2] . Survival outcomes depend heavily on the timely application of evidence-based interventions, collectiv","cbCaijFi9Cr0HF8n","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijFi9Cr0HF8n","pdf",270584,18,"English","# Background
# Methods
# Results
# Conclusion","[{"question":"What training intervention was evaluated in this study?","answer":"The study evaluated a one-day, simulation-based workshop focused on a single ACLS algorithm, including shockable and non-shockable rhythm pathways with interactive lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice."},{"question":"How were participants’ knowledge, skills, and confidence measured?","answer":"Knowledge was assessed using a 12-item MCQ, skills using an 8-step simulation checklist, and self-perceived confidence using a 5-item Likert scale at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and at one-week follow-up."},{"question":"What were the main results regarding retention after one week?","answer":"Knowledge improved significantly after the intervention but declined slightly by one week, remaining statistically significant.
