Meeks Tony Smith, Ph.D. \n~~ Chairman State Superintendent ofEducation ~~ \nOctober 30, 2015 \nDear School Partners and Parents, \nThe Illinois State Board of Education is dedicated to developing highly prepared and effective teachers for all \nIllinois students. Therefore, beginning September 1, 2015, all teacher candidates enrolled in a teacher preparation \nprogram in Illinois must complete the edTPA. \nIllinois has recognized the need for a common, standards and performance based assessment of teaching \neffectiveness that would measure the classroom readiness of teacher candidates and provide information for \nprogram improvement. The edTPA is designed to ensure that those who become teachers not only understand educational theory and subject matter content, but can demonstrate their ability to lead a classroom and ensure that students with diverse strengths and needs are learning. New teachers have to be effective from day one. \nThe edTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment designed to measure effectiveness in the classroom by focusing on student learning. The edTPA uses processes similar to National Board certification insofar as \ncandidates are required to provide evidence of their practice through the submission of video and other artifacts. \nMore specifically, items reflecting the competencies must be present in the portfolio including lesson plans, video \nrecordings of the student teacher delivering instruction, and analysis of and feedback on student learning.. The \nedTPA is a summative assessment completed at the end of an educator’s preparation program. \nPlease view the enclosed guidance document for responses to common concerns and challenges school districts, \nhigher education institutions, parents, and teacher candidates may face during edTPA implementation. \nI ask that all school partners and parents join me in supporting teacher candidates who will complete the edTPA \nprocess in Illinois classrooms. Your support is critical for teacher candidates to develop and improve the extensive \nskills necessary to effectively educate students and ensure that students are prepared for future success. \nI look forward to continuing to work alongside you in support of the edTPA process by working with preparation \nprograms, districts, and candidates to ensure that Illinois produces beginning teachers who demonstrate effective \nplanning, instructional delivery, and assessment practices, and who are prepared to enter successful careers in \nteaching our students. \nSincerely, \nTony Smith Ph.D. \nState Superintendent of Schools \n1 \nI L L I N O I S S T A T E B O A R D O F E D U C A T I O N \nIntroduction \nI llinois law requires that all teacher can","cbCaisMSGhtQerKs","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisMSGhtQerKs","pdf",511181,22,"English","# Letter from Dr. Tony Smith\n# Introduction\n# Section 1: Institutions of Higher Education\n# Section 2: Teacher Candidates\n# Section 3: Districts and Schools\n# Section 4: Parents and Guardians\n# Section 5: Other Considerations\n# Section 6: Resourses\n# Student Participation Release","[{\"question\":\"What is edTPA and who must complete it in Illinois?\",\"answer\":\"EdTPA is a teacher performance assessment for teacher candidates.
