The lesson can be initiated by watching an interview with Ed Emberley to gain insight into his creative methodology. Necessary materials include coloring tools such as markers, colored pencils, or watercolors, and a black marker or pen for drawing lines. The lesson progresses through three sequential steps. Initially, students are instructed to draw and color three basic shapes—a square, a triangle, and a circle—and place them randomly on their paper. Subsequently, they will use a black marker or pen to add facial details, with the constraint of adhering to Ed Emberley's \"drawing alphabet\" for these additions. Finally, students are encouraged to repeat this process, filling their page with a variety of colorful characters, each imbued with a unique personality.
