It actively tried to crush you into paste. \nVarek’s breath sounded like a dying steam engine echoing inside his brass diving helmet. In. Out. In. Out. It was wet, ragged, and tasted distinctly of copper and stale grease. The kraken-leather suit clung to his skin like a cold, wet shroud. Condensation dripped from the inside of his faceplate, \nblurring his vision, but he didn't dare take a hand off his crowbar to wipe it. He was standing on the ceiling of a drowned cathedral. \nOr rather, what used to be the ceiling. A century ago, this was Oakhaven. Now, it was just the Sunken Ward, a graveyard of twisted metal and shattered stained glass resting in the eternal dark beneath the Rust Atoll. \nVarek jammed the hooked end of his crowbar into a fissure between two slabs of coral-choked marble. He threw his weight backward. His heavy, lead-lined boots ground against the silt. Muscles in his back screamed in protest. \nSnap. \nThe marble cracked. A thick vein of green-oxidized copper wire spilled out from the wall like mechanical intestines. Varek’s slate-gray eyes widened. He dropped the crowbar, letting it dangle from its wrist lanyard, and grabbed the wire with both hands. He pulled hand over hand, coiling the precious metal around his forearm, shoving it into the heavy canvas salvage sack strapped to his chest. \nNot enough, his brain whispered. Still not enough. \nClaustrophobia was a living thing down here. It sat on his chest, pressing harder with every passing minute. The darkness beyond the twin beams of his suit lamps was absolute. It was a suffocating, heavy black that made him want to scream, to tear the brass helmet off his shoulders just to feel open air—even if it meant his lungs would instantly implode. \nHe squeezed his eyes shut. Don't think about the dark. Think about the quota. \nBut thinking about the quota just brought the memory of Elara. \nA year ago. The sickly rattle in her chest. The brutal, unforgiving knock of the Baron’s collectors at their tin-shack door. They hadn't made quota that week. The Air-Tax went unpaid. The collectors took their filtration unit, leaving Varek and his sister with nothing but the ambient, smog-choked air of the Atoll's lowest slum. Varek had held her hand while her lips turned blue. She hadn't even been strong enough to cry. \nVarek ripped another yard of copper from the wall, his knuckles white inside his vulcanized rubber gloves. He wouldn't fail again. He would strip this drowned tomb down to the foundation if he had to. He would pay off Baron Drask \"Steam-Chest\" Gallow, and he would buy a ticket to the Dry Peaks. \nTug. Tug. \nThe heavy braided line attached to the back of his harness jerked twice. It pulled him slightly off balance, floating his boots an inch off the marble before he slammed back down. \nReef. \nEighty fathoms above, sitting in a rusting, leaky skiff on the choppy surface, his tether-man was signaling him. Time’s up. Air ’s low. Come home. Varek glanced down at the pressure gauge mounted on his chest rig. The needle was hovering dangerously close to the red strip. He had maybe eight minutes of bre","cbCaiuj7DxrOGnsD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuj7DxrOGnsD","pdf",2778417,245,"English","# Chapter 1\n## Seventy fathoms down","[{\"question\":\"Who is Varek, and what is his main goal in the opening scene?\",\"answer\":\"Varek is an underwater scrap salvager who must meet dangerous quota demands to avoid worsening debt to Baron Drask and his collectors.\"},{\"question\":\"What drives Varek to keep going deeper after Reef signals it is time to return?\",\"answer\":\"Varek decides to stay because he believes he can find enough valuable scrap to clear the debt, preventing Reef and himself from being dragged into a worse fate.\"},{\"question\":\"What discovery changes the stakes during Varek’s dive?\",\"answer\":\"He wipes algae off a ruined pipe organ and finds a massive induction-copper coil preserved in resin, potentially worth far more than his usual daily haul.\"}]","Echoes of the Brass Leviathan - The Drowned Pact - Book 1 | PDF",377]
