It describes structural adaptations like camel desert features and explains how energy flows through ecosystems via producers, consumers, decomposers, and food chains. arefound all over the world.Animals live in cold oceans, hot deserts, steamy rain forests, and on windblownmountaintops. Each one of them has a unique set of \nadaptations.You may be surprisedto learn that animals of the samespecies have adaptations that allowthem to survive in very differentenvironments.Hares—animalsclosely related to rabbits—are agood example. \nOne kind of hare, the black-tailedjackrabbit,lives in deserts. These hareshave enormous ears. When their body \ntemperature rises, this adaptation allows bodyheat to escape from the large surface area ofthese ears. \nAnother hare, the arctichare, has very small ears.Thisadaptation helps keep bodyheat from escaping into theextremely cold air thatthis hare lives in.arctic hare \n② \n# StructuralAdaptations\n\nAdaptations do not \ndevelop during a single animal'slifetime, but over generations. When animals are born with acharacteristic that helps themlive in an environment, they \nSome frogs and toads bury themselvesin mud during hot or dry periods. This isa behavioral adaptation. \nare more likely to survivethan animals withoutthat characteristic.Theseanimals pass on the \nimproved characteristic to their offspring. \nStructural adaptations have to do with an animal'sbody.A camel’s head, for example, has adaptations thatare important for survival in the desert. Its nostrils becomenarrow slits to keep out sand, and its eyelids let light throughso it can walk in a sandstorm with its eyes closed. \n# Behaviors and Body Processes\n\nSome adaptations are in the form of behaviors, not \nstructures.Baby sea turtles know in which direction to crawl toreach the ocean after they are born, even though no one showsthem.Desert lizards stand on tiptoe to keep from burning theirfeet on the hot sand. These behaviors are examples of behavioral \nadaptations that help animals survive.3 \n# How do organismsget energy?\n\nEnergy Flow in Ecosystems
